Steven, I'm a bit confused - you're staying with friends, but
they won't let you do your washing in their machine? Even taking
into account that standards of hospitality are a LOT lower in
Germany than almost anywhere else in the world, that seems a bit
weird.
I was wondering about that. Can't you use their washing machine?

Yesterday, I had to wait a few minutes in my local dry
cleaner's, and out of sheer boredom happened to check their
price list: they charge €4.95/kg - ironing included!
That's about 6 USD, I believe. My washing machine crapped out a
year ago and I was forced to make a 40 minute round trip to do
our laundry. One large load was something like $3.25 to wash.
Drying was approx 3 bucks. And that's not counting gas to get
there and back. You guys have it good with those low prices. You
weren't complaining about the 4.95 euros, were you?
No, the exchange rate is around 1.12 or a bit more to the Euro,
you know it fluctuates all the time, so it was about $3.50 that
I lost. Not a big deal, but the principle. I was holding onto
those three coins thinking “This is all I need!” Then the
machine flakes out on me!
What a bummer. A really nice lady was next to me and tried to
help, but she couldn’t get the machine to work either, and told
me it had worked for the guy ahead of me. Bad luck is all.

But anyway, considering the 60 km round-trip, and the broken
dryer, and all those coffees in order to get change, I'd say
you'd be better off if you just went to the nearest "Wäscherei &
Reinigung". :)

No, I stay with two different families. Tomorrow I’m headed back
down South to a family I rented a room from in 1980, (they are
in the Braunschweig area and I stayed with the them on the way
up) and the next day I’ll head back to Thüringen (Neunhofen) to
Uli and Hans.
I always travel up to Jever for a few days, just by myself,
where I am now. It’s not expensive and I like the area. But, to
do a little laundry I have to go up to Esens, a cute little town
further north where they have that SB-Waschsalon. (Berlin has
those places everywhere and they are a lot more modern than this
one.)
But coming up a few days ago was horrid. I ran into this Stau on
the A27, heading toward Bremen (you can’t get near Bremen
without taking all kinds of detours around the traffic.) It said
“STAU GEFAHR” and I thought, “ah, just a little warning of what
may be a little slowdown”. Woah. They weren’t kidding. Two lanes
becoming one and the traffic just stops. Dead still. Moves ever
3 minutes 3 feet. Some people just get out of their cars and
wander around. Oh my God. So I thought, “ I’m taking the first
damn exit I can get to and I don’t care where it takes me.” So
I took this exit at someplace called Verden(Aller) and headed to
Rotenburg (Wümme), then I had to drive seemingly forever to
someplace called Bremervörder, then cut over to Loxstedt, right
below Bremerhafen, then cross this bridge over die Weser (well
they have a tunnel). It was unbelievable. I think I drove half
way to Hamburg. Gosh, that detour cost me an hour and half at
least. I don’t know what people did before GPS (used maps I
guess).

The converter I used says that 4.95 euro is $5.55 US. At any
rate, you can't get your laundry done along with ironing for
$5.55 where I live. This was in response to Alharacas.

That converter is about right. But, there’s a commission added
by some places and a different buy/sell price. I think the
converters you get off the internet are what banks buy and sell
them for? Never exchange currency at an airport. It’s a total
rip-off. Always exchange before you leave at your local bank. I
think the rate was 1.14 when I got mine. Plus, I had 850€ left
over from last year which I didn’t use. So, I just took a bit
extra, but bought them early, because the price goes up the
closer you get to Summer.

My friend Uli always does my laundry for me, and irons it. She
doesn’t have a dryer but it doesn’t matter. I normally plan a
week with her, max then a week elsewhere, then another week at
her place. It works out better that way.
Here’s a pic from Esens, and this guy is a big tea dealer/seller
I guess. He had this shop with all these little tea cups and
saucers and little tea things in it. I don’t drink tea, so I’m
not too interesting it what his business is. Alharacas will have
to help with the translation of the shop. I guess you could just
say he’s an East Frisian tea dealer? It’s an odd title.

What a pity you don't drink tea, Steven. I was going to ask you
to describe one of those East Frisian tea ceremonies to me - it
seems serving tea is kind of a ritual there, if not quite on the
level of Japanese tea ceremonies. ;) I know they have those cute
little special silver spoons for the liquid cream, and they
usually put Kandiszucker (rock sugar?) in their tea.
I knew a Kontor was some kind of trader's office, but wikipedia
says it used to be "a foreign trading post of the Hanseatic
League".
No, Jerry, I wasn't complaining about the price. Actually, I was
idly wondering whether I'd be able to justify getting rid of
some of my mountains of washing by taking them there. Sadly, I
probably wouldn't. :)

Yes, I never became a tea drinker. I think it goes back to
childhood. My friend Uli in Thüringen said the exact same thing
why she wasn’t a tea drinker, and I realized that was my
experience too. She said she hated tea because it reminded her
of being sick, as a child, and her mother bringing her tea to
drink in bed. I experienced the same thing. We are about the
same age, she’s 59 and I’m 61, so we didn’t have all the same
vaccinations when we grew up that they have now for kids. For
example, I had the mumps at age 11 (now a routine vaccination)
and was in bed for a week with it out of school. It actually
didn’t bother me much - I just saw it as a nice excuse to stay
in bed and miss school. And, I recovered from it just fine
(although I did read that it can have really serious
consequences in some cases). I never forget my grandfather
visiting me at the time when I was in bed. He was the local
pharmacist in town, and told my mom, “It’s good that he got it
now, rather than later.” I never knew why he said that until
later. But, after adolescence, it can render a guy infertile for
life if he gets in his later teens.
So, like Uli, drinking tea reminds me of being sick in bed and
my mom bringing me tea to drink. The negative association is one
I could never get over. That’s why I just cannot drink tea in
any form, hot, cold, whatever. Funny how these earlier
associations stick with you.
I’ve seen Kandiszucker everywhere up here. I probably have seen
it elsewhere in the country but haven’t paid much attention, but
in Ostfriesland it is everywhere.
But, the sad part is, it bears a striking resemblance to a
pretty nasty illegal drug:

HTML https://ibb.co/P1QxTHJ
I mean, just compare the two. One is just sugar, the
other......well a killer.
But, you can special order Kandiszucker in the States
(Wisconsin) and this place calls it “super hard” to find:
HTML https://www.bavariasausage.com/proddetail.php?prod=Sudzucker-Weisser-Kandis-White-Rock-Sugar&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpoW3jtK84wIVE9RkCh0VQg9kEAQYAiABEgJWKfD_BwE
The word Kontor was one I’ve seen a lot in Ostfriesland, but
never could really get a feel for. Even my friends in Thüringen
never really had a good explanation for it. And all Duden gives
is this:
3. (veraltend) Büro eines Kaufmanns, einer Firma.

I am generally against any sort of censorship and fear of the
name only increases fear of the thing itself. I wonder why
cocainum is banned word. Heroin, meth, crack, fentanyl, coke are
okay.
