Learned helplessness is an old term in psychology created by
psychologist Martin Seligman while he was experimenting with
dogs in a laboratory, 50 years ago. He then transposed the
concept to humans. Individuals who are confronted to repeated
negative and aversive stimuli end up giving up hope. They have
the impression that they are unable to change anything.
People who got traumatized by difficult war circumstances, like
the civil population in Syria, just to mention one recent case,
may develop this state of mind linked with depression. In order
to help them one has to try to maintain some kind of connection
with them and not let them sink in a black hole.
The term is now used by the so called movement of “positive
psychology” who theorizes that you can change the way you think
in order to improve your situation. The idea is that one should
see the glass half full instead of half empty.

Well, I’m glad not to be suffering learned helplessness.
