       Learned helplessness is an old term in psychology created by
       psychologist Martin Seligman while he was experimenting with
       dogs in a laboratory, 50 years ago. He then transposed the
       concept to humans. Individuals who are confronted to repeated
       negative and aversive stimuli end up giving up hope. They have
       the impression that they are unable to change anything.
       People who got traumatized by difficult war circumstances, like
       the civil population in Syria, just to mention one recent case,
       may develop this state of mind linked with depression. In order
       to help them one has to try to maintain some kind of connection
       with them and not let them sink in a black hole.
       The term is now used by the so called movement of “positive
       psychology” who theorizes that you can change the way you think
       in order to improve your situation. The idea is that one should
       see the glass half full instead of half empty.
