       Writing Challenge: Day 3
By: Nikola Date: July 9, 2019, 4:45 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
A bit of context: You are planning a party for someone (you
decide who) and you need to do the shopping. Advanced learners
might consider the following scenario: You can't do the shopping
due to unforeseen circumstances so you ask your husband to do it
for you. He's not a very practical person. You might have to
break things down for him a little bit.
       Make a shopping list
You might want to add further instructions (which shops he needs
to visit, what he should get if the particular thing isn't
available, where he can find it etc.)

       Dear François,
I hope you didn’t forget that we invited Laura and Michel for
       dinner next Saturday.
I’ll come back from my business trip Saturday at noon. So it
would be great if you could do the shopping in the morning. I’ll
do the cooking in the afternoon.
I will prepare a light summer meal and we will eat in the
garden, if the weather will stay warm until the end of the week.
       Here the shopping list:
       Kalamata black olives
       Pistachio nuts
       A cucumber
       1 kilo tomatatoes
       Red radishes
       A big Roman lettuce
       A bunch of fresh coriander
       1 kilo aubergines
       1 kilo zucchini
       1 kilo small potatoes
       1 kilo onions
       2 kilos red sweet peppers
       Lamb chops
       A big watermelon
       Bread
       Different kind of cheese
       White paper napkins
       An anti-mosquito candle
Please phone to the butcher in Vaison to ask if he has some lamb
chops from Sisteron. I know it’s expensive, but they are better
       then those from New Zealand.
I think that in Vaison there will be the weekly street market on
Saturday so you will be able to buy the vegetables there. No
need to go downtown. I am sure that there is also a cheese
vendor in the village. Buy three or four sorts of cheese but not
more! Otherwise we will end up eating cheese for ages.
We need a big watermelon for desert. Go to the Turkish grocer
whose shop is near the roundabout of Cluny. His name is Alif. He
is a nice guy but check the price. He has some difficulties
       making multiplications.
His pistachios aren’t good. If you go downtown these next days
you could go to a new shop. There is an Iranian nut seller near
the Mega Department Store. It’s opposite the main entrance, on
the left side of the vegetarian coffee shop where we ate lunch,
last week. He imports high quality pistachios from Rafsanjan.
You also should check if we still have some white paper napkins
and an anti-mosquito candle for the garden. They sell them in
any department store. As for the wine, I think that we have some
light red wine in the basement.
Do not forget to verify if the gas cylinder of the barbecue
grill is still full. Otherwise you have to go to buy a new one
       at a gas station.
       Thank you very much!
       Love.
       Sophie
P.S. can you check if the white linen tablecloth from aunt Lidia
has been washed? Otherwise you should wash it on Friday at 60
degrees. Do not forget to hang it up so that it dries

       Nice job, Sofia. Excellent.
A few minor improvements (and Jerry and Neal told me in chat
that I can‘t spell and they might think my grammar is a bit off
too, so take it with a grain of salt as they say):
A lot of what you wrote is probably correct, but the charges are
what just sounds a bit more common to me:
„I‘ll be (instead of come) back from my business trip at noon on
Saturday (instead of Saturday at noon, but what you wrote is
probably okay - not sure why it sounds better to me to say noon
       on Saturday).
„I‘ll prepare a light meal so we can eat in the garden. (Summer
meal is okay, it just sounds a bit different is all, and I will
sounds a bit too formal to me. English is a lazy language so we
do say and write „I‘ll“ a lot instead of spelling out I will).
„....if the weather stays warm....(instead of if the weather
will stay warm...I tend to omit unnecessary words, like „will“
       in that sentence).
„ Here IS the shopping list:“ (that was probably just a typo.
God knows I make em all the time).
„Different kinds of cheese“ instead of „kind of cheese“
„Please phone the butcher“ (leave out the „to“)
I don’t know if it‘s just an American thing, but we don’t use
the word „village“ much. It sounds archaic, so people would
just say town.... village might be okay, but I would just say
       „town“ myself.
In any event it would be „in town“ instead of „in the“ if you
       choose to use town.
„Buy three or four sorts of cheese but no more (instead of
       not).“
„Roundabout at (instead of on) Cluny“
„He has some difficulties making multiplications.“....This, hum,
is tough. You could say „he’s a dummy“. (Kidding) or you could
say he has trouble with math. The later is probably better (or
he can‘t add or something like that).
„If you go downtown these next days“.. I‘d say „If you go
downtown in the next few days“
„Do not forget to verify that (instead of if ) the gas cylinder
       ...is still full.“
Other than a few minor changes, good job!!
This has nothing to do with your note, but how come no one has
       dryers?

       Sofia

I sympathize about the Torte, but the only other possibility
would be "Salzkaramelltorte" (if you wanted to be extremely
German about it). You probably realized that "gesalzene
Karamelltorte" would suggest the whole cake was salty, but
"gesalzener Karamelltorte" really makes us blink.
That's the problem with German compound nouns - you can't really
not join them up (see "Glaskrüge"), not even when you feel it
would give you an elegant way out of the "adjective declined in
accordance with the last noun" dilemma. ;)

Thank you! I did better than I thought I would. Compound
words... get it. The only thing I don't know, ironically, is the
English expression you used: "makes us blink". I can't find it
anywhere on the internet. I'm guessing it has a negative
       meaning?
