The myth of the Autobahn without speed limits..

You know how everyone thinks in the States that the German
Autobahnen don’t have speed limits? Ha. What a joke. Yes, they
will have a short stretch occasionally of a no-speed-limit zone,
but rarely for long. They have actually more speed limits then
US freeways, and the speed limits change constantly. You can
drive along in a no speed zone, then suddenly the sign says,
120, then 100, then 80, then 60, then it ends for a while, then
it‘s 100 again, then 80. That’s how it normally goes. And, if
you go a bit too fast, you can get your picture taken by an
automatic photo machine for the police to send you a speeding
ticket in the mail.
I think I goofed up yesterday. I might have been going a bit too
fast and then saw a flash, like someone took a photo. Oops. I‘m
afraid it was a Blitzer, one of those police photo machines (you
never see patrol cars on the Autobahn).Oh dear. The things snaps
a photo of the driver and the license number......I may have to
switch rental car companies next time.

I wouldn't say 'everyone' thinks that the autobahn has no speed
limits, Steve. Quite a few Americans visit Germany and drive the
autobahn. My uncle drove on it every day for three years.

Oh, of course any American who has ever been on one knows there
are speed limits everywhere. I would guess that the majority of
kilometers covered by the total stretch of any of the various
Autobahnen are under some speed limit restrictions. Only a small
fraction of the areas covered by them is without a speed limit,
so the whole idea of unrestricted speed limits on the freeways
here is just one of those legends that got started in the US, by
someone, who probably has never been here. I really don’t know
the percentage, but if someone said only 10% of any German
autobahn is without a speed limit, I‘d say that sounds about
right.

Wikipedia says slightly more than 50% of Autobahnen have speed
limits (and I suppose implies that the remainder have no speed
limits) but it sure seems like a lot more than that to me of
areas covered by speed restrictions (but Wikipedia gives no
reference for this).
