       Guess the Language: Tortilla Chips
By: Nikola Date: July 6, 2019, 11:07 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This is going to sound terribly lazy. I was eating tortilla
chips and thinking about what to write a post about, when I
realised I could just post the bag (the name of the product and
the list of ingredients, to be specific) because there was a
rather nice selection of languages there. Can you guess any of
       them?

The order is completely random. On some of them, the name of the
country was shown so I had to do some cropping. Hope I managed
       to remove all such hints.
       Have fun!

       Having exluded non-Slavic: 6-Hungarian and 8-Romanian, we get 2
       West-Slavic (2,5) and 4 South-Slavic (1,3,4,7) what is hard to
       differentiate to me.
Starting from our close neighbours I would opt for 5-Czech and
2-Slovak. I think that "'" apostrophes are more typical to
Slovak which should have the flexion endings more familiar to
me. The word "uchovejte" I connect to Czech. Am I wrong?
       And now it's getting worse.
3 is Cyrillic, so we have a few options, but the script doesn't
look like Serbian to me (I see only the characters I know from
Russian), so I opt for Bulgarian.
1 and 4 are extremely similar. I think 4 is more like Croatian
to me, so maybe 1 us Serbian in Latin script or some other
       language of the former YU.
I always say I have problems with understanding Slovenian, and
the language looking most unfamiliar is 7.
       Ufff. I hope I guessed a few.

And if 3 may be Bulgarian, may be also Macedonian, because they
       should be similar.

Imagine how much less certain products would cost if they didn't
have to do this. Over here it's generally Spanish that gets
       tacked on.

Wow, Martin. You're good at this. I don't know whether to reveal
everything yet or not. There's still a bit of room for
improvement but not much. You got almost everything right.
Your picture... well, I can see English, I'm going to say French
for No. 2 (I don't speak French, it just has that feel), 3.
Polish because of the crossed L's, 4. I'll go with Russian, 5.
It sounds Spanish. It's definitely a Romance language and it's
not Italian :) 6. I'm torn between Turkish and Hungarian, more
inclined towards Turkish because of the Y's.

Nikola, you are 100% right ;D
       Added:
I think Irena is the only person who would get 100% in your
       question ;)
My question was a little bit more universal, though some people
could have problems with Polish and Turkish. I knew Alharacas
would know it. And you spotted the "ı" very well.

In any language that is a lot of ingredients for plain tortilla
chips. I would suggest some other snack?

You're right with that. The ingredients look very similar in all
languages. To my surprise even the Hungarian looks intelligible
here - we normally say Hungarian is as understandable as Chinese
(what means we can recognise no word). We would need something
that looks more or less like a normal story.
In my example the samples were too short, you could recognise
any word or not. Only a few specific characters gave some hints.

They're sweet chilli flavour if that makes it any better? :)
       Probably not.
