This reminds me of the times different friends from abroad came
to visit and dad kept making silly, untranslatable jokes. I
might have actually used this line.

Much as I love languages, I'm glad that's one job I never even
thought to try for. What about the wonderful rush of finally
coming up - after endless fiddling around - with the (almost)
perfect translation? :D

Gorbachev's interpreter was one who was not invisible. He was in
virtually every photo that was taken of Reagan and Gorbachev. I
remember wondering why the man was so prominent. And I'm sure
others did too. He was a part of the story, which seems rather
odd. Is anyone else here old enough to remember this?

During the Hilary vs. Trump debates in 2016 I watched the
simultaneous translations to German of the debates. They used
the a male translator for Trump, and a lady for Hilary. It was
the most hilarious thing I think I’ve ever heard. The guy they
used sounded just like Trump, with all the emotion and his
style. And the lady sounded just like Hilary with that kind of
moaning sound to her voice. But these guys went on for over an
hour. I still look at them occasionally for a laugh. The
translator for Trump matched his intonation perfectly and
emotion. You never saw the translators so no one was pacing
around or pounding on a table, but the authenticity was there.

I was certainly old enough to have remembered this guy if I had
been interested in world politics in 1986, when I was 28, but I
wasn’t paying much attention to anything Reagan was doing then.
I will say the Russian interpreter writes well, I suppose at
least in Russian, since the author of the article says they (the
publishers) translated it themselves.

Hmm... Now that I've had a look at the picture, I do seem to
remember that man's face. True, it is quite strange.
There's one reason I can think of why he'd be in that position:
when you're hard of hearing, even so slightly that hearing aids
are of no use, you need to have people speaking to you from
where you can see them, not whispering from behind your back.
There's something else I find a little strange - have you read
that holiday romance story? Why on earth would the guy say it
was about family values?

Yeah, he lost me on the family values issues. ??? He gets a bed
barely wide enough for one person and takes the trip alone (as I
recall-I read it once last night). What’s that got to do with
family.
I think he wanted to see the faces of the people talking, which
is why he is visible in the photos, possibly due to improved
language comprehension. I read once that communication has a lot
to do with visual clues, especially in earlier language
learners. This guy was obviously quite advanced, so this
probably didn’t apply to him, but earlier language learners
often say they can understand someone face-to-face, but on the
phone or not looking at them is more difficult.
This doesn’t apply to advanced learners or native speakers, but
I did hear that much of communication was visual.
