       Bermuda shorts in the office
By: Aliph Date: June 30, 2019, 12:20 pm

The conservative daily Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (
=NZZ 239 years old) allows his male employees to wear Bermuda
shorts these days, since a big heatwave hit Europe.
What do you think about it?
       Schrecklich nicht wahr?

I just read yet another article (sorry, can't seem to find it
online) arguing for men wearing skirts (half the world does it,
kilts, sarongs, French bus drivers in summer, etc.) - is that
better or worse, do you think? ;)

I think actual, traditional Bermuda Shorts were made to be worn
in hot, humid countries not just to the beach, but even in more
formal situations like work. Gotta keep "the boys" cool. It is
fine with me, I wear shorts daily, all year round.

I don't have to be too formal at work, though when I started my
work about 20 year ago I was wearing a jacket and a tie, except
for the summer. But I noticed nobody expected it actually. In my
main work I usually wear a kind of uniform, which has long
trousers by default (my female colleagues have versions with
skirts or a dress above the knees, so it must be more
comfortable these days... though some of them still prefer the
standard version with long trousers). In the other working place
I just wear the uniform jacket on my private clothes. I would
never go in short trousers knowing I had to meet people (let's
say, clients). Last week I decided to go in short trousers, but
I knew I step in for 2 or 3 hours to do some paper-work only
(and the temperature was 39C according to my car display, and
this working place has no AC). Maybe I will repeat it tomorrow
afternoon, though isn't so hot now (today was up to 36C, only
the highway surface was above 50C what I saw during today's
       trip).
My wife's boss comes in a short trousers to work, but when he
went dressed like that to meet the general manager last week, he
had to listen to a few bitter words. And when you are at work,
and you are not the general manager yourself, you never know who
may deserve to see you immediately for some stupid reason ;)

I don't care to look at men in shorts. Sandals on men, I find
       gross.

I think that kilts and white dishdashas must be confortable and
help to keep cool the “bijoux de famille” (in French family
jewels) those precious anatomical male body parts. I read once
that if they get overheated the production of spermatozoa drops
drastically. It seems that tight jeans are responsable, among
other factors, of the decrease of fertility in the West.

Every Summer in Europe has been just like this, one heat wave
after another. The only relief if on the North Coast where I
       like to go.
My prediction is more people are going to get air conditioners
installed in their homes and offices in Europe in the near
future. You didn’t have to deal with this 40 years ago, but it’s
constant nowadays. There’s no reason to feel miserable or not
be able to sleep at night because of it, or have to wear shorts
to work, which doesn’t help anyway. There are numerous options
on the market now. Some A/C units are even portable. You just
need a hole in the wall to vent them.
We’ve had to deal with this forever where I live so we are used
to it and prepared for it. No one doesn’t have an air
conditioner in their houses or apartments. Every business has
them. Every cheap run-down apartments built in the 60s have
       them.
After I got back from Germany last Summer I took this photo from
       inside my car:

And this one was while driving on the freeway, so it was the
       same, sitting still or moving:

       That’s 45C.
At the same time, San Francisco was like 74F /23C, just 50 miles

Thanks for the like rating MartinSR. I rarely get any rating
here, but I do think I am liked ??? Hopefully I’m not fishing
in an empty barrel as they say.
By the way, the song I was listening to in that one display I
posted was pretty good. It’s an old song I first heard at the
end of a movie a year ago, and liked it. It’s a gospel song
recorded in 1971 by a black church choir from the South Side of
Chicago. It was recorded in a low budget studio in downtown
Chicago and sold by the church in small quantities.
Then it was discovered by someone decades later and distributed
nationally and became a hit. It was a song that had been
sleeping for decades. Pastor TL Barrett, “Ship without a Sail.”
       A cool song.

Neal, how can you wear shorts year round? If you were 18, okay,
maybe. But at your age? ???
I don’t care. Whatever floats your boat as they say.
