What your favorite breed of dog says about you........

Well, that’s what the German says.
So, if you have one these little muts following you around in
public it’s got to be a major embarrassment. Can you imagine
having one of them as a guard dog? I don’t know what one of
these little muts could be possibly good for.

All I can say is, the more a dog resembles a cat, the more I
like it. However, even the most cat-like dogs cannot compare
with actual cats! ;D

Agreed. Give me a cat any day over that thing. ;)

I dont know that little dog in the picture but my mother bought
a Lhasa Apso when our St Bernard got old. Historically in his
Tibetan homeland the Lhasa's job was to be active and alert, and
wake up the other (far larger and more vicious) guard dogs
whenever he heard an intruder.
The Lhasa was an expert at hearing me come in late from a party
or date and waking up the whole house by waking up that half
deaf old St Bernard and getting her barking. Previously Schatzi
and I had an understanding that involved cold cuts and meat
bones traded for silence, but there was no way to sneak past
that Lhasa, and no way to shut him up.
Cute or not, many a night I wanted to kill that little dog.

Aren’t those Lhasa Apsos those little mutts like that one in the
picture? I can only imagine women over age 80 wanting one of
them. Lap dogs is all they are.
Schatzi is the German Name for sweetie you know, or babe.
Anyway, interesting theory about those Lhasa Apsos- to wake up
the bigger dogs to do the real defending. Maybe those little
mutts had some purpose? ???

Twenty years ago I had a Dachshund ( yes, Steve, I know that
it's a Teckel in German ). One day I was out walking it in the
neighborhood when a woman came up to me and asked if that was my
dog. Yes, I said. You look more like a guy who'd have big dog,
like a German Shepard, was her blunt reply. I'm still not quite
sure how to take that comment.
I'm kind of indifferent on dogs these days. Two summers ago a
Pit Bull tried to attack me. That sort of thing will tend to
change your mind about dogs.

Tibetan dogs are something else. They tend to be so loyal and
protective and compared to other breeds, they probably overdo it
a little. My brother has a Tibetan Mastiff. He got her as a
guard dog and boy is she good at it. They're a truly remarkable
breed. Just getting hold of one was a challenge, not only are
they quite rare, but they only give birth once a year like
wolves, and all around the same time of the year. So if you want
a puppy, you have to wait till it's Tibetan Mastiff time.
They're thought to be one of the oldest dog breeds still in
existence. They were given to Alexander the Great, who used them
for protection against lions and elephants. Marco Polo wrote
they were "as tall as a donkey with a voice like a lion".

Yeah, I really couldn’t see you with a Teckel, one of those
wiener-dogs.
Everyone said “Oh Pitt bulls can be really sweet. It’s just the
bad owners who raise them to be aggressive.” Well, I don’t know
about that. Then you hear those stories about one of supposed
good ones them taking off a toddler’s hand or something. They
really are monster dogs. They are sort of a bad mix. Aren’t they
a Staffordshire bull terrier and something else? The
Staffordshires are cute, in an odd sort of way. But the Pitt
bulls? No thanks.
I think a Pitt would have that little mutt in the picture for
lunch.

That Tibetan Mastiff is cute. I’d take one of those.
My mom grew up with a Chow Chow in the house, one of those
Chinese dogs. Chows are kind of aggressive and not that cuddly.
I bet it’s because the Chinese ate so many of these, they wised
up and now it’s in their DNA. They see a human, and think, “Ok
buddy. Keep your distance! I’m not ending up in the next noodle
soup you decide to cook up.”

I've heard about this before, dog owners wondering if their dog
can tell someone eats dogs. I've heard of strange encounters
some dogs have had with tourists from countries where this isn't
completely uncommon. The dogs would suddenly panic and refuse to
come near those people. It might have been a coincidence but it
makes you wonder, since they can sense so much more than we can.
