Trump: Make Iran Great Again! MERGED WITH comments from Cultural
        Snobbery
By: SHL Date: June 22, 2019, 5:22 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This story if too hard to believe, but it sort of supports my
theory of what I said under Neal‘s tread about the shooting down
of the drone by Iran and Trump‘s decision not to take action.
  HTML https://www.n-tv.de/politik/Trump-will-Teheran-zu-Wohlstand-verhelfen-article21102452.html
It just goes to show you Trump is just trying to get Iran back
to the negotiating table...because, that’s what a good
businessman does. If you were running a business, it would
likely work. We‘ll see what happens.
I couldn’t post the whole story here, so this is part of it
(it‘s not long, but for some reason it couldn’t let me cut and
paste the whole thing so I could translate it):
       FB
       TW
       whatsapp
       mail
       drucken
"Sie werden so glücklich sein, und ich werde ihr bester Freund
sein." US-Präsident Trump sieht für den Iran eine rosige
Zukunft. Unter einer Bedingung: Das Land verzichtet auf
Atomwaffen. Bis es soweit ist, stellt der Amerikaner neue
       Sanktionen in Aussicht.
Weißen Haus in Washington.
„They‘ll be so happy and I‘ll be their best friend. US President
Trump sees a rosy future for Iran. Under one condition: The
country gives up a nuclear bomb. Until then, the American holds
out the prospects of new sanctions.
US President Trump would be, according to his own account,
Iran‘s „best friend“ if the country would give up (on the idea
of) building nuclear weapons. Then the Islamic Republic will be
a „prosperous“ country, Trump told journalists at the White
House in Washington. He announced further sanctions on Monday
against Iran for Monday without mentioning details.
The US President holds the prospects of lifting sanctions as a
condition, as he specified earlier, for the leadership in Iran
having to continue to do without building nuclear weapons. He
looks forward to the day, when sanctions would be lifted, Trump
wrote on Twitter- „the sooner the better.“
This is so typical Trump, the whole German story just made me
laugh. And below, are pictures of people burning US flags in
       Tehran.
       This part is good too:
„Der 73-Jährige fügte in Anlehnung an seinen alten
Wahlkampf-Slogan "Make America Great Again" ("Macht Amerika
wieder großartig") hinzu: "Wir werden es 'Make Iran Great Again'
nennen, ergibt das Sinn? 'Make Iran Great Again', das ist in
„The 73-year old added, in reliance on his old campaign slogan
´Make America Great Again`....We’ll call it „make Iran great
again“, does that make sense? Make Iran great again, that‘s okay
with me. Further, Trump said, with regard to the strict Muslim
clerical controls by the Iranian leadership, there could very
quickly be a deal. That‘s up to them. „But if they act dumb,
       that‘ll never happen.“

US Policy Towards Iran SPLIT FROM Cultural snobbery (mine!)
By: NealC Date: July 13, 2019, 12:56 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Honest question - where do we go with Iran? What do we hope
for? The two groups you mentioned above do not seem to be good
       answers. What is?
One of the best books I read before 2016 election was a
political piece that called for a new era of engagement with
Iran and Turkey, that engagement with them would be part of the
solution to problems in that portion of the world.
While i dont think we will ever be as close to those two nations
as we are to the Saudis and the Israelis I thought he had a good
point, and the approach to international relations I approve of
most is active engagement along the lines of the famous Kennedy
speech - inhabiting the same small planet, breathing the same
air, and cherishing our childrens futures.

@Neal: Policy towards Iran is probably worth it's own thread.
Was that book you read by Steven Kinzer?
       [/quote]
Actually, we do have several threads about US policy towards
Iran. Perhaps, Nikola, you'd be good enough to move the last
couple of posts to one of them?
The problem with those threads is I don't always trust myself to
remain polite enough in my responses. But anyway, here goes.

Please define "close", Neal. Close in which respect? Shared
       values, is it?

Close as in working together to solve problems. I just don't
think it is better to not work with other countries because we
do not like some aspect of their behavior. Indeed I could say,
hey the Saudis and Israelis are scumbags, I want to work with
Turkey and Iran more. But in that part of the world you hold
your nose and do what you can.
