Do you trust Google translate?

In a recent post, SHL recommended never to use Google translate.
I do not share his opinion. I only use GT for Arabic and I must
say it is not bad. I do not use it as a dictionary since I have
a dozen of these resources for Arabic on my tablet, but for
general text.
I was looking for an Egyptian vegetarian recipe on the Internet
:Koshari a popular street food in Cairo.
First I watched the videos on YouTube and then found a recipe
and translated it with GT.
Look at the result, not bad:
اغسلي
الأرز
وانقعيه في
الماء
الدافئ من 15 –
20 دقيقة،
صفيه.
في قدر
كبير سخني
الزيت
واقلي
البصل الى
ان يصبح
ذهبي، خذي
بعض البصل
واحتفظي به
جانبا
للتزيين.
أضيفي ماء
الى البصل
، دعيه
يغلي ثم
أضيفي
العدس
والثوم
والكمون
والقرفة،
غطي القدر
واتركيه
على نار
هادئة الى 20-25
دقيقة الى
ان ينضج
العدس.
أضيفي
الأرز
والملح،
قلبي جيدا
،أضيفي
مزيد من
الماء ان
احتاج
الأمر. غطي
القدر
واتركيه
على نار
هادئة من 25 – 30
دقيقة الى
ان ينضج
الأرز
ويتشرب
الماء.
ضعي الكشري
في طبق
تقديم
مستدير،
وزعي فوقه
المكرونة
وانثري
عليه البصل
المقلي،
قدميه مع
صلصة
الطماطم.
Wash the rice and soak it in warm water for 15-20 minutes.
In a large pot, heat the oil and sauté onions until golden.
Take some onions and keep them aside for decorating.
Add water to the onion, let it boil, add the lentils, garlic,
cumin and cinnamon, cover the pot and leave on low heat for
20-25 minutes until the lentils are cooked.
Add the rice and salt, my heart well, add more water if needed.
Cover the pot and leave on low heat for 25-30 minutes until the
rice is cooked and the water is soaked.
Place the kashiri in a round serving dish, sprinkle with pasta
and sprinkle with fried onions, feet with tomato sauce.

To some extent - when translating from a language I understand
very little and don't speak at all to English.
NEVER - when translating between 2 languages different than
English (because I believe the stupid machine translates it to
English, losing a lot of useful information that way, and from
English to the 2nd language- generating gibberish as a result).
Many times I tried to explain confusing situations on one social
media (not language related) seeing the results of such
translations. Sometimes it took the different meaning of the
word (some words have more than 10 meanings), changed tenses,
ignored or misinterpreted double negation, and so on...
I see it's getting better with every year but I don't trust it.
One example:
One of my friends from Slovakia wanted to inform our Spanish
(female) friend {I wouldn't need to add this "female" if I used
different language, you see}, that he was busy doing some
repairs at home, so he had no time to be online. And he has
written that he was masturbating in the bathroom all this week
???

I recommend against using Google Translate and especially any
voice-activated translators, which are actively marketed. They
are horribly inaccurate and unreliable.
I think Google-translate is worthless, except in the most
simplest of translations (like „what is your name?“) for which
you shouldn’t need Google-Translate anyway. Most translations it
gives are pure gibberish, ungrammatical and simply bizarre.
Google-Translate is also NOT programmed to recognize any idioms
in a language, which causes a loss of probably 30+% of useful
and common idiomatic expressions (or idiom-like expressions)
used in everyday language.
Google-Translate can be compared to about 1995 internet
technology. It‘s got decades to go before being useful. The
technology is just not there.

I really disagree with you SHL . But as I said my experience is
limited to Arabic/English. I use it to have a first glance of a
text that I do not know at all.
Bing Translator is bad however.
I remeber also years ago I offered a friend who was doing her
PHD in Vienna an expensive CD-ROM with French/German
Translation. It was useless for academic texts.

Steve read what Google translate wrote. I am not a perfectionist
and am a Jack of all trades but the translation is acceptable,
in my opinion
Ich empfehle gegen die Verwendung von Google Translate und
insbesondere gegen alle sprachaktivierten Übersetzer, die aktiv
vermarktet werden. Sie sind schrecklich ungenau und
unzuverlässig.
Ich halte Google-Translate für wertlos, außer bei den
einfachsten Übersetzungen (wie heißt du?), Für die du
Google-Translate sowieso nicht benötigen solltest. Die meisten
Übersetzungen, die es gibt, sind pures Kauderwelsch,
ungrammatisch und einfach bizarr. Google-Translate ist auch
NICHT so programmiert, dass Redewendungen in einer Sprache
erkannt werden. Dies führt zu einem Verlust von wahrscheinlich
30% der nützlichen und gebräuchlichen Redewendungen (oder
Redewendungen), die in der Alltagssprache verwendet werden.
Google-Translate ist vergleichbar mit etwa 1995er
Internet-Technologie. Es dauert noch Jahrzehnte, bis es
nützlich ist. Die Technologie ist einfach nicht da.

Google Translate has improved over time. It's much better now
than it was circa 2010. Now, if you need a highly reliable
translation, then hire a (human) translator, or better yet,
learn the language! But for many purposes, an approximate
translation with some mistakes thrown in will suffice. I imagine
it also depends on which language you're using it for.

I just tried to translate a random text from French to German. I
wonder how many German speakers would be able to write like
that.
The French original text
Résumer la philosophie de Proust est un défi, tant vastes sont
ses références, complexe sa pensée et subtile son expression.
L’ensemble de la Recherche du Temps est une source de
commentaire philosophique, mais Albertine Disparue, le 6ème tome
de la Recherche, nous apparaît comme le plus riche de ce point
de vue.
Albertine disparue (La fugitive) raconte une souffrance
amoureuse : Albertine, qui vivait en concubinage avec le
narrateur, le quitte et fuit son domicile. Le narrateur tente
tout pour qu’elle revienne, en vain : ce non retour devient
alors l’occasion pour Proust de décrire les ressorts du jeu
amoureux (indifférence, chantage, comédie de la rupture,.. .).
Plus tard, le narrateur apprend la mort accidentelle
d’Albertine, mais en même temps qu’elle l’aimait toujours et
souhaitait revenir.
La seconde phase de la souffrance amoureuse vient alors : après
la douleur immédiate vient le travail de l’oubli et du deuil.
The Google translation to German
Die Philosophie von Proust zusammenzufassen ist eine
Herausforderung, so groß sind seine Referenzen, die sein Denken
und seinen subtilen Ausdruck komplex machen.
Die gesamte Zeitsuche ist eine Quelle für philosophische
Kommentare, aber Albertine Disparue, der 6. Forschungsband,
scheint uns in dieser Hinsicht der reichste zu sein.
Albertine verschwand (Der Flüchtling) erzählt von einem Leiden
in der Liebe: Albertine, die in Konkubinat mit dem Erzähler
lebte, verlässt ihn und flieht aus seiner Heimat. Der Erzähler
versucht alles umsonst zurückzukehren: Diese Nicht-Rückkehr wird
dann für Proust zu einer Gelegenheit, die Quellen des
Liebesspiels zu beschreiben (Gleichgültigkeit, Erpressung,
Komödie der Pause, ...). Später erfährt die Erzählerin von
Albertines Unfalltod, doch gleichzeitig liebte sie ihn immer
noch und wollte zurückkehren.
Die zweite Phase des Liebesleidens kommt dann: Nach dem
unmittelbaren Schmerz kommt das Werk des Vergessens und der
Trauer.

I was looking at a Japanese newspaper and trying to find another
example for SHL... ;D
;)
But then I thought to find another language spoken by one of the
EGP members

There are some things I use Google translate for and other
things I don´t. I do like to use it as a tool to help me review
my own writing in Spanish. I like to put what I have written in
Spanish and see what errors come up in it´s translation to
English-- it functions like a spellchecker and occasionally
finds some grammar mistakes. I know full well it does not catch
everything but sometimes catches the silliest little errors.
Sometimes I will write things two different ways and see which
one it translates the most like what I want to say.
I rarely use it to understand what others say in Spanish, my
target language. Although I did not totally understand that
joke Alharacas posted in German, I understood more of it using
Google translate than I was able to get with my own memory of
German classes from 30+ years ago. To satisfy my curiosity,
Google translate was easier than expecting her to explain every
word to me--- it gave me the gist of it and I asked her to fill
me in where it was obviously failing to give information.
Occasionally, when someone posted a topic on the English forum
in a script I did not recognize I would use Google translate out
of curiosity.
I would definitely miss Google Translate if it were not
available.
