       Nikola? Is this Czech or Slovak?

       Nikola, do you think you could watch a tiny bit of this video,
       and tell me what language (Czech or Slovak) Lydia is speaking
       in? It sounds Czech-like, but some of her endings are different
       from what I learned...  ???

       She is speaking Slovak. They talk about it in the video. He says
       that she can speak eight languages plus Slovak and she adds "and
       Czech" but then says "pasivně".
       You're right, the word endings are different. Some words are
       completely different:
       volám sa = jmenuji se
       robím = dělám
       ako = jak
       počúvať = poslouchat
       veľa = hodně, moc
       rozprávala som sa s = povídala/vyprávěla jsem si s
       skoro = brzy (it can also mean the same as skoro in Czech)

       Sigh. I figured. (Thanks.)
       This is depressing. I've been learning Czech for ten-minus-two
       months (I mean, I started ten months ago, but I had to take a
       two month break in the middle), and I understand Slovak (which
       I've never studied) better than Czech. :'( She said at some
       point in the video that she "lost" her active Czech when she
       learned Polish, but I figured maybe she managed to regain it.
       Thanks again, though. I appreciate it. :)

       It's a very nice example. I guessed it right too, since I have
       friends in both countries and we try not to use English while
       writing between us. It's a lot of fun.
       I should say that I have sometimes real problems with guessing
       which one of two I hear. When I have a larger sample I usually
       bet the one which is easier to understand is Slovak.
       I wander if you know the movie about the adventures of Czech
       astronauts in outer space. I have seen the funny episodes when
       they meet Polish astronauts and another one when they meet
       (empty!) Slovak space station and try to make a contact. It's
       very funny. I saw them on YouTube long time ago. Maybe Nikola
       will remember its name.
       Btw. I saw (in a box above this forum) a few last sentences from
       the chat you have. I will answer in Polish:
       Nikolo i Ireno. Widziałem tylko dwa ostatnie zdania z
       rozmowy. Nie mogę więc powiedzieć ile
       zrozumiałbym po czesku. Ale w tych dwóch zdaniach było
       tylko jedno słowo (nie pamiętam jakie), którego
       znaczenia musiałem się domyślać z kontekstu.
       Zazwyczaj używamy podobnych słów, albo są to
       słowa używane w dawnych czasach - jednak ciągle
       zrozumiałe.
       Często bywa, że prawie identyczne słowo znaczy
       coś zupełnie innego.

       This picture shows the lexical distance among different
       languages. It's the degree of overall vocabulary divergence.
       Slovak is a lot closer to Serbian than Czech in that respect. So
       you must have had some understanding of Slovak in the first
       place and it probably improved when you became familiar with
       Czech grammar. Just take it as buy one, get one free :) It
       doesn't say anything about how good your Czech is.

       I understood the stuff in bold. The other sentences, well,
       so-so.  ;)

       Great. Knowing Serbian, Russian and Czech (one from each of the
       Slavic sub-groups) you are on the straight way to understand all
       Slavic languages.

       In my opinion the diagram shows the lexical proximity is not
       everything. According to it I should understand Czech better
       than Slovak. Of course learning Russian (And some basic Croatian
       vocabulary) makes me (and Irena too) untrustworthy subjects to
       this type of evaluation.
       I have real trouble with understanding Slovenian (Slovene?),
       when comparing to others. I don't understand the proximity of
       Lithuanian which is not more understandable than Chinese to me -
       the idea of the Balto-Slavic group seems to be some kind of
       propaganda to me. And I find much more words of Romance origin
       than Germanic in Polish vocabulary - of course I count many
       words as Latin not English when they exist in both (Paul from
       Langfocus said once that English vocabulary comes in 1/3 from
       Latin, 1/3 from French(old) and only 1/3 from English... And it
       appeals to me).

       And I found the episode of the movie I was referring to.
