Not anywhere exotic this year. I'm hoping to spend about two
weeks in London, catch up with friends and work with a very
special little person I used to work with at the school for
visually impaired kids (my last place). I've done this a few
times since I left London, always during the school holidays. We
go to parks, stroll along the Thames, he screams and scares
people, gives me hugs and dribbles all over me. Perfect company
:)
I might visit my friends in Germany on my way to London, or my
cousin in Luxembourg. We've been meaning to see each other for a
long time.

Some of You probably noticed I've spent a weekend in the
Netherlands this year already (travelling via Germany by car)
and 2 weeks on a journey to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. So
my holiday time is practically over for this year. After a few
weeks of consistent begging my boss, he promised me to give me
one additional free week in August, so I planned an express trip
to Portugal (Lisbon-Fatima-Porto and return via Madrid with one
night stay there). It will be very short time... but at least. I
plan to meet my internet friend (Portuguese) in Porto and (if
possible) another friend in Lisbon (I have a friend from
Slovenia who works on the Ljubljana University, but also at
Lisbon university - I haven't yet asked where is he going to be
in August).
A few years ago I have a custom, that I tried to learn basics of
the language of the country I traveled to - it's the source of
my Italian and Spanish limited knowledge, but also some Turkish
a few years ago (I was able to order coffee or juice, kebap, and
understand the amount of money I had to pay... and not much
more).
Unfortunately my work schedule changed so much that I had no
time for languages now, so... bye bye Portuguese (I understand
some written and little of spoken Portuguese, but I wouldn't
dare to speak).

Oh, Nikola, Luxembourg. Love the place. Well, I wasn’t there for
long but it was my second European country to ever visit (in
1979- Iceland was first, but only one night). That was back when
Icelandair only flew from the States to Luxembourg. But, such a
great location. „The Heart of Europe“ they used to call it on
the ADs. Close to everything. Findel was a nice little airport
with the train station nearby. Great place.

I've seen the city from the bus, I used to travel back and forth
between Prague and London. I really liked the parts I saw. I've
been to the airport there once because my German friend lives
about one hour from there. British Airways have cheap flights to
London Heathrow from Luxembourg. Sadly, my cousin was in Spain
at the time.
I didn't know you'd been to other places than Germany.

Just the Parthenon? Will you have to close your eyes and avoid
seeing other tourist sites in Greece?

Oh, I‘ve been to Holland, and to the UK several times. And,
Iceland of course is always my stopover since it‘s the closest
European destination.
This is the plane I took back to New York City from Luxembourg
in 1979. I know it is THE plane I was on because
Icelandic/Icelandair only had one DC-10, ever, and it only flew
from Luxembourg to NYC and back.
It was kinda funny because I recall that plane being 9 hours
delayed. Once it got delayed somewhere it never made up the time
and there were no other planes to switch it with to make up for
it, since they only had the one DC-10 and their old DC-8s were’t
big enough to carry the passengers.
I recall wondering what kind of screwy airline they were back
then, having to wait 9 hours for a flight, and watching the
plane land over the rolling green hills onto the runway from the
observation deck with nothing to do but sit in the bar and drink
beer. But, I‘m still a loyal Icelandair customer.
