       Indian Scammer Calls
By: SHL Date: May 28, 2019, 7:14 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
The folks in Europe are lucky because they don‘t have to deal
with this, most likely because of the language barriers, but
here we get these scammer people from India and Pakistan or some
places like that, who randomly call people from these phony
numbers, that look local, (it’s all this internet technology)
and then they lie and tell you they are from some governmental
agency and try to get money out of you. If you don’t pay or
refuse, they threaten to have you arrested and say the police
are going to be at your door in 30 minutes (sure....right). How
nasty can you get? And they say stupid things like „you are
going to have to fight this in the courthouse (which they
pronounce as „goat-house“). And their English is so bad, they
use expressions like, „you are going behind the bars.“ Behind
the bars? Where do they get these horrible translations? Off
       google-translate?
I got a call today from some guy with a heavy Indian accent
saying he was „ Adam Smith“ (they always use these fake
American-sounding names, like John Smith) saying he was from the
Social Security Administration, then they come up with some
ridiculous story and say if you don’t give them money they are
going to have the police and your door, and they also try to get
confidential information out of you to steal money from you
       somehow.
One of them called me this morning and I knew immediately it was
a fake. I tried to insult the guy ever way possible, but he
didn’t care. I told him his English was so bad I could barely
understand him and no American agency would ever hire anyone
with such a pathetic ability to speak English, or with such a
heavy an accent as his (I just made that up, he had a heavy
accent, but I could understand him ok). Then he said not to go
anyway because the police were on there way to pick me up. I
told him to go ahead and give it his best shot. But, that threat
really pushed me over the edge. Unfortunately, I‘m one of these
people who has a bit of a short fuse and can get easily riled up
and provoked, which is bad for me. (You all probably know that
       already- sorry, I try to control it-but I am a bit high-strung.)
He hung up on me and said something in Hindi, then I called him
back about 5 times, he kept hanging up on me, but then started
babbling someone and I told him I wasn’t going to stop until he
stopped trying to scam money out of dumb Americans, who didn’t
know any better (not that they are all dumb of course. Many are
just poor old trusting people who are not up on this junk). And
I told him I was turning him into Interpol, and the police were
going to bust his call center any minute. I got so upset I
started getting upper chest pain again around my heart and left
shoulder, and I figured I better give up on him, that it wasn’t
worth it. So I hung up and just blocked the call and had to take
a tranquilizer (Xanax) to calm myself down. Then the heart pain
went away. But, I had an appointment today with my cardiologist
and I told him this story. He just smiled, checked my heart and
said everything sounded fine, and to relax and not to let myself
get upset like that if I could help it. And he upped my blood
pressure medicine too because this shot my blood pressure up way
       too high.
So, another reason to look forward to my Germany trip in July.
No more Indian scammers to deal with. I was wondering if Neal,
Jerry or Susan have to ever deal with these fools calling them
up, and what they do, or all the robo-calls we get in the
States, unsolicited people calling to try to sell you something?
I bet Neal and Jerry handle these fools better than I do. ;)

"NoMo RoBo" is free, and gets rid of the robocalls. Doesn't
stop the people who call with spoofed numbers. They show up on
my caller ID with a local town as the name, not a person's name
or a business name. I don't bother answering them.
If one does get through I fool with them if I am bored,
otherwise I hang up. My favorite ploy is to tell them, "I am
very interested in hearing all about this, can you hold for a
few minutes?", then I put them on hold. If you do quick
check-ins every few minutes you could keep them on hold for
       quite a while.
Once I asked a robot if she would perform a sexual act with me,
her response was that could get her in trouble with her
supervisor. Almost got lucky that day.

Yes, Steve. I can think of two calls that have ticked me off
like that. And I could not even count how many recorded
messages I get claiming to be from Social Security telling me my
number has been used in some bad way and that I need to call
       them.
The first guy was similar to yours. He called my office and my
secretary passed him on to me thinking that it could be about
one of the many investigations of sexual abuse that I have
reported to law enforcement. When I talk to him he claims to be
¨John Anderson¨ of the DEA. When I confront him that I did not
for a minute think that a ¨John Anderson¨ of the DEA would speak
the way he does and I did not believe he was following DEA
policy, he told me the authorities were on their way to my home
(obviously he did not even know the number he was calling was my
office) because of drug transactions I had reportedly made with
a Canadian pharmacy.) If there were ANY doubt in my mind that he
was a fraud that cinched it-- no way have I bought drugs through
a Canadian pharmacy. All I could say was ¨Great, send them then
so I don´t have to call the police myself.¨
More recently I had someone call my office and ask me to return
his call, leaving a phone number and the name of a Captain in
our Sherriffs department. Fortunately I had just seen in a
Facebook group of practitioners that this scam was going
around-- they were calling other therapists for some reason--
and that although the name did belong to a real member of our
Sherriff´s dept the number was not correct. I could easily
verify that the number given was not the number listed
publically for this individual and instead made a report online
       of suspected fraud.
I agree with you Steve, these things are so annoying. And I am
concerned that they could potentially slow down real
investigations (not only take up my time trying to be a good
citizen and do some due diligence and not just flat out ignore
any supposed call from a government agency or law enforcement.)
But that is the world we live in here and thinking ¨it should
not be that way¨ just makes us madder. The quicker we let go and
accept American professionals are prime targets for scams and
that is just part of the cost of doing business, the better.

If I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. Problem solved.
Take it easy, Steve. Stress can kill. Or at the least make life
       miserable.

Thanks for the answers. I got a good laugh out of Neal`s.
We seem just plagued by this garbage in the States and there‘s
nothing much we can do about it. They can‘t really pull this in
Europe, at least they couldn’t outside of the UK or maybe
Ireland, due to the language barrier. I know they try it in
Canada. They couldn’t call someone up in Germany and do this
because none of them are likely to speak German. Ditto goes for
almost all the other countries over there.
Actually, when I kept calling that toll-free number back this
scammer connected me with some other American guy he was also
scamming. The American guy said, „I thought this was something
to do with the Social Security Administration?“ Then I explained
to the guy that this was a scamming Indian call center, probably
in Mumbai or someplace and to hang up on them. A 2 minute search
on the internet or YouTube proves that easily.
And what gets me is they pull the same old scam for years
sometimes, which eventually gets so old they have to invent a
new one, usually a spin on the old, because it stops working.
One old scam is the Microsoft scam. That`s the one where they
call you up and say your computer is infected with a virus and
for a fee they will help you clean it up, while all they are
doing is trying to steal private information from you off your
own computer as well as get the fee.
There‘s one particularly funny YouTube clip where they call up a
guy who really is a computer whiz and he plays along with them
for awhile, but ends up planting some lock-key device on the
scammer‘s computer and deleting all the scammer‘s files. That
one is pretty funny, because at the end the scammer‘s computer
is locked up and he can‘t access the computer without a password
that the guy the scammer called installed while they were
talking. The American guy says, „I just installed a password on
your computer, so now you can‘t access it.“ The scammer starts
pleading with him for the passcode, and the guy is just like,
„sorry pal.“ The scammer is literally begging saying , „please,
please, please, I‘ll get in trouble with my boss.“ Of course,
       the begging gets him nowhere.
I normally do just hang up on them but today I took the day off
for my cardiologist´s appointment. I‘ve had a few where this
machine leaves a message using a computer voice that has an
American accent, but the English is all off grammatically, and
the names of government agencies are all wrong. They‘ll refer to
the „Social Securities Administrations“ and use other strange
phrases, but with American-accent sounding computer voice. The
language is what gives those phony calls away immediately.
That‘s one of their new things now, trying to get around the
accent problem, which is so easy to detect. Hearing someone
pronounce „courthouse“ as the „goat-house“ is pretty much a
       giveaway. ;)

I can´t remember if someone posted this here on EGP or I saw it
somewhere else. Here Steve, maybe John Ollivers robocall
campaign will cheer you up a bit.

       SHL,
I'm sorry about the trouble. But honestly....I think we are
friends...To be honest, I laughed to read

Thanks Chizoko, that‘s very kind of you ! I‘m glad you enjoy my
       comments.
If they ever want to send me come cats from the Japanese cat
island, send them over. I love cats (I‘ll take three- they can
be friends). Right know I‘ve got about 5 baby deer living here,
two 3 males with the little baby horns growing out of their
heads and little young female. They run away every time I try to
take a picture of them (I wanted to post one). But, they‘ve
decided to make this their home eating all the leaves on
       everything.
