Oh, how can they measure something like that in a population of
325,000,000?
“To test these hypotheses, we draw on a novel, 13-wave panel
survey conducted with a nationally representative population of
American adults between 2007 and 2018,” they wrote. “Our
findings contradict both hypotheses, as we primarily find
declining prejudice and racial resentment, and certainly no
increases.”
The study involved thousands of Americans surveyed and
resurveyed over a decade, which allowed researchers to identify
specific shifts in attitude, and Trump’s rise to the presidency
was significant.
Wonder how many thousands were studied, 2? Out of 325,000,0000
people? That study proves nothing.

They do polling all the time with specific samples in the few
hundreds as the basis for opinions in the US. This is from
thousands, resurveyed, over the course of a decade. How do you
get a better sample than that?
Even anecdotally I can affirm - there is a lot less racism in
the US than there used to be, especially since our first Black
President, Bill Clinton.

Speaking of polling. Does anyone remember the night that Trump
won the presidency? The media was crowing all night about how
their pollsters had Hillary Clinton with a 99% confidence of
winning. They continued this charade up until the numbers came
in that showed Trump with the win.
I'll say it again, this is why at least 60 million Americans
don't trust the media.

Actually, that article provokes a little hope in me-- and does
correspond with my hope that we are not seeing an actual
increase in racism, just increasing publicity and sensitivity to
it. Maybe we are making progress.
But the part of the article I found most interesting, and novel,
was the part about ¨theories of thermostatic response.¨ I did a
very quick and dirty search and found this when I wanted to know
what the heck a ¨theory of thermostatic response¨ might be.

Take a look at this quote from the article: 1 A Theory and
Model of Public Opinion Change
We begin with the assumption of an inattentive electorate, one
that cares about public
policy in an ill-defined way, but does not care enough to be
very well informed. We
postulate that the public has cognitions that are roughly
accurate about the main line
of disagreements between the parties. But these are far less
rich and detailed than the
latest wrinkles or strategic policy positions. This public
knows, in a general sort of way,
that the Democrats want government to do more and spend more, to
play a larger role
in equally dividing the economic pie, and that Republicans take
roughly the opposite
positions. These policy scripts we will refer to as party cues,
what the parties say and do
to maintain their images with the public.
Party Control and Public Inference Although short on political
knowledge of specific kinds, the electorate does know which
party controls the White House at any given
time. We postulate that it uses this knowledge to make
inferences about public policy. If,
for example, Democrats are in power, regardless of the specifics
of legislation proposed or
acted upon, it infers that policy is changing in a liberal,
government expanding, direction.
This is a critical shortcut that reaches essentially similar
conclusions about what government is doing (and spending) to
what would emerge from detailed and careful knowledge,
4
but obviates the need for attention to details.
This seems to combine some of what we are talking about both in
terms of problems of ¨fake news¨ and populism, where general
public opinion is heavily shaped with ¨news¨sources that provide
¨sound bites¨ or ¨memes¨ and little detailed analysis.

The Founders did try to impress upon us, it would take an
educated, involved populace to hold the freedom they won.
