They just have’t seen the beauty of the progressive left, as in
Scandinavian countries, those with the happiest people on the
planet.

Actually, the Scandinavian countries have high rates of
alcoholism. And most of the country is not happy with having 70%
of their earnings confiscated to pay for the welfare state. I've
never met a happy alcoholic. Have you?
These countries aren't pure socialist. You need to look at that
great success { cough, cough } called Venezuela to see just how
socialism works.

What the article talks about is not just conservatism, but
populism. I believe Trump is considered to be the first populist
U.S. Presidential candidate since William Bryan Jennings.
Chavez, the prior extremely popular Venezuelan leader (prior to
Maduro) who converted the country to socialism was also a
populist candidate in his day. He won the election and replaced
almost all the ¨elites,¨the educated members of government with
¨common people¨ and then also put them in charge of, for
example, their petroleum industry. He picked Maduro to succeed
him later when he was dying from cancer. The ¨chavistas¨ in
Venezuela were so popular that Madura was put in place inspite
of what I am told is common knowledge that he was a bank-robber
during his 20´s.
Unfortunately Venezuela can be used as the worst example of what
can happen related to populism as well as the worst that can
happen with socialism--- the Venezuelan people were attracted to
the ideas of social equality and thought the wealth of the
country would be shared fairly. The government is inept at
meeting the needs of the people but very skilled in things like
corruption, intimidation, and staying in power.

Venezuela in the end is probably just garden variety theft by an
inept bunch of thugs.

I don't think the populism of Chavez is the main reason of the
current crisis of Venezuela. The biggest reason is interpreted
as the drop in international oil prices since the end of 2010
and the conflict with the United States. It was the start of the
crisis that the devastating economic structure depended solely
on the oil industry.

Jerry, have you ever been to Scandinavia, preferably in
October-March? If you want to understand Scandinavian
alcoholism, I particularly recommend a visit in November or
December. You'll fully understand then. (Hint: It has nothing to
do with socialism.)

I know it's about the weather, Irena. Everyone knows that. Steve
is the one saying that it's a wonderful place. I wasn't
particularly tying it to Socialism. I may be wrong, but I
believe that Steve is of the opinion that Socialism makes
everyone happy regardless of external circumstances. That was
the thrust of my comment.

Let me just say that I would strongly recommend that anyone with
a family history of alcoholism stay the hell out of Scandinavia.
Well, it's okay to visit in May. I even recommend it. But then
go back home, tell everyone just how absolutely wonderful it is
(and it is truly wonderful: in May), and don't come back until
next May!!
