European Parliament Election
By: Nikola Date: May 21, 2019, 3:01 pm

It's almost here. I was just looking at the candidates and
wondering why so many anti-EU parties are trying to win seats in
the European Parliament. It's a bit of a strange concept. Are
they hoping to disintegrate it from the inside? How much damage
could they realistically do if they win one third of the seats,
as some pessimistic sources suggest?

I did hear Nikola, that there was a rising sentiment among some
politicians in the EU, who actually were beginning to disfavor
the EU. Not as extreme as the Brexit crowd, but it seems to be
increasing.

What does the European Parliament do, exactly?

As far as I know, it deals with the budget, legislation
(alongside the Council of the EU, which, by the way, is not the
same as the European Council, I just found out) and decides
which new countries will join the EU. The Parliament doesn't
propose new laws, though. That's something the European
Commission does.
It's all explained here:

It’s really sad. I think that a strong Europe bothers all those
who would like to keep their leadership over the world. And the
far right is rising everywhere. It’s scaring.

I'm not on Facebook but I know that here, these kind of groups
send emails to people of my parents' age to make them panic.
They're usually pictures of large crowds of refugees, some
made-up statistics and claims that "this is what the EU wants".
It's a campaign built on hate and fear and it seems to work.

Thank you for the link Sofia, it is interesting that Facebook
has the same problem in Europe that they have in the US. Do you
really think this is the work of larger forces against Europe or
is it just clever people in small organizations stoking
political fire in support of their candidates or issues. I had
always believed it was smaller operators, but both Russian and
Chinese sites tried to influence our 2016 elections.
How do they get the emails? Unless the front pages qualify the
prospects in some way it would be like any other junk email. I
imagine this is where the genius of having special interest
pages comes in. "Oh that is an email from my
sports/health/fashion Facebook group I like so much, I wonder
what they want..."
@Steve if you could get over to Europe this might be a great job
for you, as you have the special facility of turning every
conversation (even your recent personal health issues) to an
indictment of the opposing political party. You would make an
excellent small group infiltrator/facilitator.

The emails are just spread among the old generation who are not
very skilled with computers. Many of them only know how to
receive and send emails and they get them from their friends so
they open them. These topics are appealing to both far-right and
far-left voters and there are many socialists over 60 in this
country. Almost everyone has a lefty friend. They share jokes,
songs, videos of dogs in the snow, you know that kind of stuff.
And once in a while, this junk arrives. There was a program on
TV about this. They managed to find one guy who writes this
stuff. An old bitter guy who has nothing better to do. They
asked why he was writing something that wasn't true and he
answered "I can write whatever I want".
