Help: I am so ignorant
By: Aliph Date: May 19, 2019, 8:19 am

I know that one can say: “he’s nice”
What about the following sentence is it correct “God‘s rule“. Or
should we say „Gods rule“? But that changes the meaning.

Are you trying to say that God Rules the universe?
Or are you referring to a specific rule or law Thou Shalt Not
Steal -- it is God's Rule.
Or are you a polytheist, and think that gods rule the universe?

You're not ignorant, Sofia. I think you know the rule and
probably just got yourself confused thinking about it too much.
The possessive form and the contracted form of the verb to be
look the same - Dad's book vs Dad's here.
In God's rule, God's is the possessive form. It is the same as
saying his rule.
In Gods rule, Gods is the plural form and rule is a verb. It is
the same as saying they rule.
There could also be Gods' rule, the plural possessive form,
meaning their rule.
More about the possessive form:
HTML https://www.ef.com/wwen/english-resources/english-grammar/forming-possessive/
You can see an example there: For God's sake!

Well, you have to ask Neal. He’s the God expert here. I’m a bit
intrigued by the Nordic gods myself, like Thor and burning a
hammer to him, things like that. And, doesn’t he have an
eight-legged horse that lives behind the clouds? Maybe hides
behind the clouds. You just can’t see that horse when it’s
cloudy. Pretty reasonable thing to believe. And isn’t his wife
Frigga?

Thank you very much Nikola, it sounds so easy now. Suddenly the
doubt came up and now it is clear. Well I ignore all the rules
concerning English, a language I never studied, I just learned
it by immersion and had no idea about what you call in English
the « status constructus »
Neal and SHL, it was not a metaphysical question. I took the
word God as an exemple. Thank you anyway.

Sofia, I wasn't trying to be metaphysical, I was trying to
understand what you were trying to communicate so I could help
out.

Sorry, sometimes I don’t say things clearly. That’s why I love
professional language teachers because they seem to be able to
read one’s mind.
But I am grateful for any hint, you were always very helpful
Neal.
