A personal conspiracy theory: where is the most expensive painti
       ng of the world?
By: Aliph Date: May 19, 2019, 7:28 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This year in Italy and France commemorate the 500 years of the
death of Leonardo da Vinci, the genius of the Italian
Renaissance. One of his paintings was recently sold by Sotheby
to Mohamed Bin Salman (MBS) for an astronomical price. Now the
painting desappeared. The Louvre doesn’t say a word about it.
Was it a fake? Some doubt that Leonardo painted it and that
would explain why everybody now keeps silent.

I have a personal conspiracy theory that I invented and didn’t
       find on the net.
Strangely the painting shows that MBS has some resemblance with
the Salvator. So the Saudi crown prince bought the painting to
flatter his own ego which is constantly in need to be fed.
Then the Salafists became aware of the purchase. They told him
that he shouldn’t praise a painting where Jesus (a simple
prophet for Muslims) was portrayed as the son of God.
Did the Salafist destroy this work of a miscreant heretic?
Or does MBS try to to get rid of the painting reselling it?

Wow. Looking at the pictures I think you are exactly right, he
bought it to satisfy his own ego.
Perhaps the Salafists are upset about the painting but I doubt
they have the power to destroy it.
It would be interesting if they did destroy it, and MBS came out
and said they destroyed it because the painting was heretical.
I think that would throw the art world into paroxysms.
Congratulations Sofia - you started your very own internet
conspiracy theory, and you did it right here on EGP! :-)

Look they are capable of anything. They even destroyed ancient
remains supposed to be the house of Mohamed‘s first wife, or
       something like that.
And what about Kashoggi’s desappearance? The painting is much
smaller, you can burn it. They tell MBS : “listen kid, you may
buy castles in Europe and sail around the world in expensive
yachts, but leave this nonsense to the Kafir”.

Wow. This is great. And you guys think I'm the only one who
comes up with what you consider conspiracy theories! The
hyper-rational Sofia has invented a conspiracy theory. This is
great. Congratulations, Sofia! Who knew you and I had anything
       in common.

Thanks, Sofia, lovely! I adore conspiracy theories - at least as
long as nobody's asking me to take them seriously. ;)
Unfortunately, I think it's a lot more likely the painting's
disappeared into a safe or something, because I'd also read a
lengthy article about it being, in all probability, a total
       fake.
  HTML https://www.zeit.de/kultur/kunst/2017-11/da-vinci-gemaelde-fuer-rekordsumme-von-450-millionen-versteigert
On paper, the article was a) considerably longer and b) included
a picture allowing you to compare what the painting looked like
before and after it had been restored by somebody who's
apparently very, very good at "leonardo-ing" paintings... ;D

Leonardo is easy to fake because he himself added so many layers
to his paintings, often painting them over long periods.
This one has no real background, that strikes me as strange for
Leonardo, even the small Mona Lisa has a background. To me this
painting is his case study on how to use flesh colors to create
effects. It seems the rest of the painting is almost an
afterthought, and naming it after Jesus just an attempt to make
       it marketable after the fact.

Most painters in that era over-painted, Neal. Materials were
expensive. They've done x-rays on lots of paintings and found
one or more other paintings below the surface.
What I read was that this painting is 'from the workshop of'
       Leonardo.
The art world is a dirty business.

I dont mean painted over a different painting or over another
version of the same painting. I mean Leonardo would paint the
same picture for months, possibly years, doing different things
and changing them. It was like a living experiment.

Your conspiracy theory is quite interesting, Sofia.
Well, I don't think the crown prince looks like Christ and he
purchased the painting for his self complacency. He, very
wealthy Arabian prince, is well-known for the luxurious taste
for expensive items, like yacht or properties. Maybe the famous
painting might satisfy his vanity, too.
And there is little possibility for the Sunni Muslims to destroy
it. Its price is $450.3 million. No matter how crazy they are,
       they can't do that.
I suppose other possibility for the missing. Some experts say it
was painted by one of his assistants, not Leonardo himself, and
others insist Salvator Mundi is Leonardo's.
I think Salvator Mundi can be possibly fake work. Actually there
are two Mona Lisa that are estimated to be Leonardo's: Mona Lisa
in the Louvre and the younger Mona Lisa that was found later.
Which is authentic Mona Lisa? Moreover, Salvator Mundi had been
sold in quite cheap price before, when it was considered to be
painted by his assistant. After some art critics reversed the
estimation, it became one of the most expensive paintings.
However, who knows? At any time the estimation can be reversed
again. The Saudi prince might notice that it's fake and possibly
trying to handle the matter secretly.
