Wow. It sounds like the plot of a science fiction novel:
       ¨2024.¨
I have heard that China, and some other Asian cultures are more
prone to use shame. This sounds like taking shame to the level
       of torture.

Well, Italki gave us a little hint of this functioning.
Aren’t we all Laolai, I mean most of us.

If it's true, it's absolutely awful.
Can I just ask, and I don't mean to compare these two things,
it's just the registration and how they work with shame, why I
remembered this - the sex offender registries in the US. I heard
different states handle it differently and in some cases,
something as minor as having sex with an under-aged person
(under-aged by months) can get you on the list, even if you end
up marrying the person. Is this true?
I found this on Wikipedia about who can access information about
       you if you are registered:
States apply differing sets of criteria to determine which
registration information is available to the public. In a few
states, a judge determines the risk level of the offender, or
scientific risk assessment tools are used; information on
low-risk offenders may be available to law enforcement only. In
other states, all sex offenders are treated equally, and all
registration information is available to the public on a state
Internet site. Information of juvenile offenders are withheld
for law enforcement but may be made public after their 18th
       birthday.
I mean, what's considered an offense in China is totally
ridiculous and conflicts with human rights (being punished for
playing computer games? seriously?) but where do you draw the
line when it comes to real offenses? Is this ever a good thing
to do? Should people be able to check about their neighbours'
       offenses?

The sex offender thing is a big deal in NY. Depending on type
of offense you can get a rating from 1-3. 3 never goes away.
You can look up your address on a database and see where the sex
offenders are who live close to you -- it is even a function of
Life Lock, the online identity protection service.
It is a tough one, I dont know if people are ever really 'cured'
of pedophilia. I guess I dont mind if people know about the 3
rated, but I wouldn't want people to go over there with
pitchforks and torches. Local moms can sometimes rise up at
times with the whole "Think of the children!!!!" thing. I grew
up in the world Chris Rock described where everyone had a
'molester uncle' and you knew to stay away from them, and if you
didnt and he caught you, you were the one who was going to get
in trouble. "We TOLD you to stay away from Uncle Roger didnt
       we????".
With Statutory R-a-p-e laws and 'Age of Consent' in the US it
can make things a bit more difficult. I dont think a 18 year
old should have a permanent sex offender charge on their record
because he had consensual sex with his 17 year old girlfriend.
But a 25 year old... it is hard to draw the lines. Some of it
could probably only be done by a psychologist in clinical
       interviews.

Thanks Neal. I guess if you are a 3 you cannot really say it's
unfair or unjustified but I would just worry it would be
counterproductive. Another problem is if you move to another
state, they might not care whether you're a 1 or a 3. For
example Illinois apparently reclassifies all registrants moving
in as a "Sexual Predator" regardless of their previous rating.
That doesn't strike me as a very good idea.
They don't actually mention if the social credit system in China
will take previously committed crimes into account. In this
picture, I can only see traffic offenses and a lot of really
       silly things:

The very number 1300 is enough to give me psycho-trauma. That
was the number you needed on your SAT pre college tests if you
wanted to get into an 'Ivy League' school.

You're showing your age, Neal. You'd never get into an Ivy
League school with that sort of score nowadays. Well, maybe if
daddy is very, very rich. ::)

They score them differently now dont they? Back then 1600 was a
       perfect score.
