We had a discussion with one of my students about people's real
intentions when they say things or post comments, specifically
about how much easier things would be if people who just want to
talk about themselves said something like "great topic but let's
talk about me" ;D
I remembered this video I saw a while ago. You don't get to hear
what the couple are saying to each other. Instead, they say
where they're going with it (what's hidden under the surface).

What would an EGP discussion in this style look like? I'd love
to give it a try.

I was informed that my post could be seen as a dig so I just
want to clarify that this wasn't my intention at all. Perhaps I
should have stated my intention the way they do in the video -
"posting something I find funny, hoping to see some
self-reflection resulting in hilarious comments".
Talking about oneself is just one of the many reasons behind
saying something and I see many people (including myself) do it
here, on italki and in real life. I just think it's really funny
when we verbalise it like this. Of course, there's so much
more... "not knowing enough about the topic so making a pun
based on one of the words", "disagreeing for the sake of it"...
We could have some fun with this but it depends on if we're
happy to laugh at ourselves.

I think that little exchange took a LOT of effort for the
writers to come up with.
Can't I just call Steve a commie and that would be enough?

Yeah, it's pretty impressive. And it was filmed in one take.
