Scared, Steve? Come on. I see people open carry all of the time.
I've seen more than one red-blooded, masculine American male
open carry at that commie-infested hole known as Starbucks.
That's a REAL American there.

Try to stay focused long enough to address the question.
Besides frightening your pansy @ss, causing you to pee yourself
and then call the police for assistance, the people in the
picture are still not violating the California State Statute.
Some counties in your very own State are just as likely as Texas
to have some open carry enthusiasts.
How did your pioneer ancestors live long enough to spawn your
species?

I'm going to try to imagine for a minute that carrying guns
around is a great idea and a sensible thing to do... Why would
you carry them on your back? Isn't it really impractical? I
don't know how well attached they are to the belts or holsters.
If they're easy to take out, anyone can steal them and kill you
or someone else. If it takes some effort, then you won't be able
to use the gun quickly enough and then what's the point of
carrying it?

Despite the fevered ramblings of some on this forum the above
are not typical pictures of anywhere in the US. They are
pictures of an "Open Carry" political group that wants to put
emphasis on our Freedom to Bear Arms by shocking people when
they actually do so.
It wasn't that long ago in the US (especially in the west) when
a trip to town meant strapping on a pistol, when answering the
door meant taking the rifle down from over the mantlepiece. I
really don't want to go in to a 7-11 with some guy strapping an
AK-47 to his back, but I would rather have that than
disarmament.
When I first moved to the rural area where I live now I was
driving and there on the side of the road was a black man with a
shotgun, just walking up the street. Where I come from
originally, the lily white towns in Nassau county if you saw a
black man with a gun you called the police. So I did the same
here. They asked me "Did he have a number pinned to his
chest?". Seems it was Duck Hunting Season.
I have grown up a little bit since then.

OK so let's see if I follow the logic. They want to be allowed
to bear arms so they're trying to convince those who don't think
it's sensible or safe, by carrying them in a way that promotes
fear and doesn't serve any real purpose?

Yeah that is about it.
I'm sure there are political groups in your area that are a
little bit weird too.

Right, except that they aren't trying to convince people who
disagree with them; they're trying to intimidate them. And it
works: it's pretty darn intimidating. Ugh.

Actually, they are already allowed to bear arms -- the
Constitution guarantees it. Especially 'long arms' - not
handguns.
I don't belong to the Open Carry movement, but I imagine one of
their goals is to demystify the presence of guns. Some people
freak out just seeing a gun.
One of the things that struck me after 9-11, comparing us to
Europe for instance. We accept armed Police every day - while
in England for instance they celebrate the fact that the 'Bobby'
is unarmed. Correct me if I am wrong but most European police
are unarmed? Except for certain units.
What happened immediately after 9-11 was the presence of the
ARMY in the streets, especially at Airports and Transportation
hubs. Americans definitely don't like that, while I know in
many other countries the Army is all over the place.

I don't really know Irena, I can certainly see where some might
be intimidated, but I am not sure it is a goal of that movement.

Yeah, totally, we have this politician Tomio Okamura who was
born and raised in Japan, his father is half-Japanese,
half-Korean, and his mother is Czech. To cut the long story
short, he's really against immigrants. I think that's quite
similar as far as common sense goes.
