Nôtre Dame: as it was, or different?

I'd be interested to know what you think about these ideas for
re-building the roof of Notre Dame:
  HTML https://www.demilked.com/notre-dame-reconstruction-designs/
Do you think roof and spire should be re-built to look as
similar as possible to what they looked like before the fire?
(Keeping in mind that an exact reconstruction is impossible -
trees like those the original rafters were made from don't exist
       anymore.)
Or do you think there's something to be said for a more modern
       look?

It would be interesting if they would take the opportunity to
try something new. They have to use different materials, they
could celebrate the new materials in the design.
To be honest Notre Dame has never been one of my favorite
buildings, I really don't like the rectangular towers or how
they work with the rest of the structure.

My immediate reaction is "noo, those are so wrong" but I know
that my perception of such things changes over time. First I get
used to it, then I think "this is pretty unique" and some five,
ten years later I'm wondering why we don't have more things like
that and why people are so inflexible when it comes to change :D

Didn't the French hate the Louvre at first, but now the design
       is celebrated?
I loved the Twin Towers, but the Freedom Tower is growing on me.

"Among the flood of voices responding to the fire, perhaps one
headline captures the essence of its aftermath best—and it comes
from an unlikely source, The Onion: "Paris Vows To Rebuild Notre
Dame Despite Cosmic Absurdity Of Seeking Inherent Meaning In
Fleeting Creations Of Man.” Published on Wednesday, the
tongue-in-cheek and satirical article cleverly foreshadows a
dilemma that is just beginning to bubble up: how the
existentialist and revolutionary attitudes of French culture
will respond to the restoration of Notre Dame, a religious,
       historic, and traditionalist landmark."

I think that no matter what they decide to do, there will most
       likely be protests :)

Another crusade for the Yellow Vest brigade? ( Notice how I
cleverly inserted a French word in there? ;) )There's nothing
the Frenchies love more than a good, old-fashioned protest.

Thanks for the link to the Forbes article, Jerry (can't say the
same for the book - a bit of trolling there?) - I hadn't
realized the collapsed spire had been a 19th century fake (the
original having been removed in the 18th century for safety
reasons). So much for bemoaning the vandalization of Paris'
       ancient Christian heritage. :D

Well, France 'does' have an ancient Christian heritage. It's
sadly disappearing along with the near total obliteration of
Christian Europe. I'm not sure that I'd call the destroyed spire
a fake. It was added in the 19th century. That's really all I
know about it. I suppose that it replaced an earlier one. At any
rate, I do know that spires were not a part of the original
design. The building has changed a lot over the years, according
to what I read. And this is to be expected in something that
took at least 100 years to build and was started in the 12th
century. There's probably no pure religious building in the
       world of that age.
And let's remember that this is a religious building, first and
foremost. What the secular world thinks it should look like
ought to be of no consequence. It was built to serve Christians.
Catholics, to be precise. It's not a playground or amusement
       park.

Well said. Christianity is no walk in the park.
