       Back from the Hospital.....
By: SHL Date: May 10, 2019, 5:02 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Some of you, whom I consider my good internet friends from all
over the world, may have wondered why I‘ve been so quite over
the last few days. Well, a couple days ago I was getting chest
pains with walking, even only a half a mile. So, I went to the
emergency room at the hospital. (This had been going on a couple
of weeks.)If they hear at a hospital three words: „male, chest
pains, 60 years old“ the alarm bells go off in their heads, and
they run you through every test imaginable: blood tests for
everything there is, chest x-rays, the whole bit, and they admit
you to the hospital for a cardiac angiogram to look at the
arteries in your heart. So, that all happened to me, but I
stupidly forgot my iPad (but I had my iPhone and forgot the
charger- wonderful). So, losing my internet connection is like
getting sent to Mars or some place. That was horrible, being cut
off from the world. So what an experience that was. I had to be
there two nights and undergo a grueling heart angiogram
yesterday, where they stick a catheter thing up your arm into
your heart and look for blocked arteries. Not fun. Sometimes if
you have a big enough blockage they can put in a stint, like a
support strut to open up the blood vessel. I had multiple
partial blockages (of like 80% or more) but fortunately they
were only on the smaller arteries, which are less dangerous in
leading to a heart attack. That‘s what was causing the chest
pain the doc told me. They couldn’t put in stents in me and
said they would just treat my situation with heart medications
and no surgery. And, they said I have to go on what they call a
„cardiac diet“, which is low fat, no salt. Everything that is
boring. One nurse said, „Oh if you went on a vegan diet that
would be the best for you.“ I thought „oh no. Wanda from
Italki!“No way I’m going vegan! What a horrible thought! I even
have to carry around those nitroglycerin tablets in case I get a
heart attack, which I didn’t have thank goodness, to open up
your arteries immediately but they give you a splitting headache
       they tell me.
So, It‘s good to be back with my great EVP friends, all of you,
and join in the debates again! My cardiologist is a former
military officer in the medical corps, but boy did he look like
a typical, right-wing Trump supporter guy. I could tell he was a
Republican. No humor, all business. But a very smart guy I have
to say. He said my bloodwork was all normal, liver blood tests
all normal, everything was normal, which was good. Chest x-ray
was normal and all my EKGs (about 5 of them) were normal, so he
said it was definitely a heart artery blockage. He turned out
       being right.
So, now I‘m on a boring diet, statins to lower cholesterol,
blood pressure meds, the whole program. I don‘t smoke (never
have) and don‘t drink, expect for maybe one or two beers in
Germany each year and a glass of wine at my sister‘s annual
Christmas party. That’s about it. My only vice is coffee. I
otherwise just drink mineral water- European-style.
I was discharged today with about 6 big bottles of medicines.
What an experience. And it‘s no fun being in a hospital. You
can‘t sleep, it‘s busy with people constantly sticking
electrodes on you, IVs, pocking holes in you for this or that. I
told the nurse, „If you are healthy coming into a hospital, you
sure ain‘t going to be when you leave!“
Anyway, it’s good to be back. Fortunately I have good health
insurance so it only cost me $200, but with no health insurance
the cost would have been through the moon (you know how it goes
       in the US with healthcare).

Wow Steve, glad to have you back. Very sorry about the food
thing, I know I would hate that.
I wont tell Wanda a thing.

Welcome back, Steve! Have some kale, and please don't get
       overexcited!

Thanks Neal. But, I not going vegan. And I’m not giving up the
coffee. I’ll do de-cafe but I can’t give it all up. That would
be horrible. They didn‘t say I had go vegan, but said it‘s great
for people with cardiovascular disease (CAD) like me. I bet the
Mediterranean diet is a good alternative. The people of Italy
have one of the healthiest diets in the world, or so I‘ve been
told, and I bet they have less cardiovascular disease too.

Thanks Irena. I did hear that kale was good for heart disease. I
guess I have to eat a lot of vegetables and pasta from now on.

Oh my goodness, Steve. Glad you're back. Did they tell you not
to get too wound up about politics? I hope they did. Just take
       it easy.

No, they didn‘t Nikola, but thanks for the comments. Good idea
though. I did tell a nurse I was sooooo tired of hearing about
every time Trump sneezes or wipes his nose, like the news has to
report on, I just can‘t listen to it anymore. It‘s information
overload, if you know what I mean. Or what size dress Melania
just bought, or that she put on 10 pounds and won’t hold Trump’s
hand? Who cares? Well, I don’t blame her. I wouldn’t want to
hold his hand either! That’s US news for you. That‘s why I like
the internet. It opens up the world to you.
       She agreed. Too much information.

Wait, wait, wait. How do you know all this stuff? First I heard
of it. Steve, take a break from the news! If you don't seek it
out, you won't find it! Go read some Goethe or something (just
not that Werther stuff). It's far more intellectually
stimulating, and more importantly, much better for your heart!

Welcome back, Steve. I had been wondering where you were. I just
figured that you were tied up in court divorcing some unhappy
       pair.
I'm very glad to hear you're okay and grouchy as ever. I suppose
you and Wander will start a chat room now. You could retire from
the law and go into business with her marketing kale and
Brussels Sprouts. You two could be the next Linda Mcartney.
Wanda and Steve's Fine Vegan and Raw Foods. It has quite a ring
to it. You two can pose in tie-dyed t-shirts, torn jeans, and
       Birkenstocks. I can't wait.
I second Nikola & Irena, lay off the news. The world was
spinning before we arrived and will go on spinning just fine
without us worrying about all of that crap. Think about it.

Well, I just made that up as an example, but it‘s seems to be
that crazy, so that‘s one reason I like international news and
social forums. But I can‘t even open up Yahoo without the news
site starting up about another trivial Trump story. I see those
and I just pass them by.
