There are other variations in US IQ scores that are best
explained by immigration of the smartest, asian scores tend to
be higher here as well.

I don't know. Sometimes it's the smartest, sometimes it's the
most wretched... It all depends. Also, regression to the mean,
as Nikola pointed out.

Frankly, IQ tests scare the sh*t out of me. They can be used as
part of an excuse for so many things. For instance the current
corelation, if it were available during the age of exploration,
or the age of imperialism, wouldnt it seem be more proof why
'developed' nations should rule over the 'savages'?
Also, the time periods in the authors article, they seem to be
way too short to reflect sucessive generations. We are talking
about the same people taking the test at different points in
their lives, and getting smarter due to economics?

I think we have to be open-minded about what IQ means and not
see it as "universal" intelligence, I'm guilty of that too. It
seems to reflect the ability to prosper in well-developed
countries where individual effort brings results. As we said in
another thread, it doesn't reflect your ability to survive in
the jungle, for example. Therefore higher IQ doesn't make you
smarter, it just makes you more able to do well in a certain
setting.

Agreed on the scariness of IQ tests. And you're right, it's not
exactly "successive generations." But it's also not necessarily
the same people. Suppose you make significant changes (for
better or for worse) in your primary education. You can see
quite noticeable differences in test scores (and yes, that
includes IQ scores) within just a few years.

I tend to think that, if you compare people who grew up under
very similar conditions, and one of them has significantly
higher IQ than the other, that difference says something
significant about the underlying intelligence. But if you
compare people who grew up under different conditions, you have
to be very careful about drawing conclusions based on IQ scores.

But if we see differences in the scores in the same people due
to education perhaps one inference is they just got better at
taking tests? I know I got real good at taking tests during my
school years.
Not that I disagree, it is just a completely different point of
view. It argues for more poverty and education intervention at
younger ages.

The top 25 article is interesting, the list is remarkable as you
have some of the largest immigrant countries (US, Canada,
Australia) side by side with some of the most homogeneous.

Yes, yes. This is all quite true.

Just a small suggestion to the mods: split off the IQ
discussion? ;)

It had occurred to me but it's related to the conspiracy theory
that was being discussed here and we keep coming back to it.
It's kind of hard to split, unless we split it from where we
stopped talking about the Holocaust. Any suggestions welcome :)

Feel free to be arbitrary, splitting it would be fine.
