On the topic of Jews being over-represented in various
intellectually demanding fields, this could be one possible
explanation: According to various studies, Ashkenazi Jews have
an average IQ in the range of 107 to 115 which makes them more
intelligent than most ethnic groups. This gives them a
significant advantage when it comes to intellectually demanding
jobs.

above-average verbal and mathematical intelligence in Ashkenazi
Jews, along with somewhat below-average spatial

Ashkenazi Jews had only mediocre visual-spatial intelligence,
about IQ 98, while a 1958 study of yeshiva students found that
their verbal IQ (which includes verbal reasoning, comprehension,
working memory, and mathematical computation) had a high median
of 125.6.[6]
Another kind of evidence is that Ashkenazi Jews have had success
disproportionate to their small population size in a variety of
intellectually demanding fields, such as science, technology,
politics, law, and commerce.[10][11] Only about 2% of the U.S.
population is of full Ashkenazi Jewish descent,[1] but 27% of
United States Nobel prize winners in the 20th century,[1][4] 25%
of the winners of the Fields Medal (the top prize in
mathematics),[8] 25% of ACM Turing Award winners,[1], and a
quarter of Westinghouse Science Talent Search winners[8] have
either full or partial Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. Jews comprise
up to one third of the student populace at Ivy League
schools[10] and 30 percent of U.S. Supreme Court law clerks.[11]

Given their above-average intelligence and their general success
in the academic field, it is hardly surprising that they should
be over-represented in some professions. In fact, it's probably
for the best :)

I believe that statistic is just for Ashkenazi Jews in the US,
not worldwide. Worldwide it should be 100, unless there was
some serious inbreeding (which tends to bring down the average
by itself!).

Worldwide it should be 100? Why? Or more... how? :) I haven't
checked all the references but one of them says "On the high
intelligence and cognitive achievements of Jews in Britain" so I
believe those are worldwide statistics.

Worldwide on every race/ethnic group SHOULD be 100. I read the
article, it seems this group is really peculiar. Definite
inbreeding, some genetic diseases, but advanced intelligence.

The author makes the argument that the wealth of a nation
increases average IQ, rather than the other way around. American
Jews also test much higher on IQ tests than Israeli Jews (or at
least that was the case a few decades ago).

Wow, that's very interesting, Irena. It explains quite clearly
that IQ doesn't seem to be genetically determined, since even
the guys who used to think so (Lynn and Vanhanen), ended up
disproving their own theory. So that explains the difference
between American and Israeli Jews but doesn't it, at the same
time, imply that American Jews should score about the same as
the rest of the US (and not higher like they do)? Surely, if it
depends on the geographical area (as in country or its part) and
how well it's doing economically at the time, there shouldn't be
any difference between these two groups, don't you think?

Countries that have a lot of immigration can sometimes have
skewed results on IQ tests as their sample populations are not
normal or average. I think it is freedom and economic
opportunity that attract higher IQ immigrants.
I will check the article out.
