       A bit of nostalgia
By: SHL Date: May 2, 2019, 12:15 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Jerry‘s mention of warming up the TV set on another thread made
me a bit nostalgic I have to say. I recall we had while I was a
little kid, what I think is about the most beautiful car ever
made, a 1959 Cadillac. It had this AM radio in it with tubes. I
remember turning it on as a little kid, and peeking inside the
dashboard and seeing this light come on and then you had to wait
a few seconds and slowly you could hear the sound of the radio
station. Pretty high tech. None of these modern transistor
       radios back in those days.
Yeah, that was a great car with these huge tail fins (very
stylish) and it had this sloping truck. My sister and I used to
use the truck as a sort of ski-slope to play on. But I recall
she hit it herself on one of the rocket-style tail fins and got
a minor injury. Can you imagine getting hurt by walking into a
car tail fin? They were fairly sharp. Then it only had optional
seat belts up front, for safety, but no one used them, so I
could stand up on the front seat when I was 5 years of and look
out as my mom drove around town. No seatbelts but lots of ash
       trays and cigarette lighters.
It was a cool car. I recall my dad bought it in 1961 and we
picked my mom up in it at the hospital after my sister was born.
I was three. I‘ll never forget looking over the back seat
looking at my mom holding my younger sister (no baby car seats
then. You just hung onto the kid in your lap), and wondering
„Wonder where that baby came from?“
       What a cool car.
Now, someone tell me this is not the most beautifully designed
       car you can Imagine:

To capture its elegance you have to see it from the side. Ours
wasn‘t black but beige colored. Still what a car. See those
modern rocket tail lights. You could hurt yourself if you bumped
into one of those tail fins.

Didn't they make the original Batmobile from that model?

No, they did not make the batmobile from this style, Neal. This
is what you call class, a work of art, a Picasso on wheels. ::)
Generous use of chrome in those days too.

I never understood the whole fin thing, but I do get that the
60's is when real luxury in cars started to hit the middle class
market. Our first luxury car that I remember was a 68 Chrysler
       Imperial.

       Neal, the fins on cars came about because of the space race;
rockets with fins. I love them.

I get that, and I know the Mustang was named after the airplane,
       not the horse.
       This is more my style:

We had a small Austin. Ours was green. Isn’t it cute?

       Sofia,
That is cute. I went through about 3 VW beetles as a teenager
myself. I don’t know how safe they were, but easy to fix and
fun. Small, low to the ground, but great for a teenager or
       20-something. I even had a Fiat once, a 1973 Fiat 128.
Neal, now that‘s a good-looking car. I was going to say it
looked like a late 60s era Chrysler. Chrysler did a great
styling job in the late 60s to 70s. I don‘t know who they went
down the drain by the 80s so fast.
Our Cadillac was all electric too, with standard air
conditioning (because it was the Fleetwood model, upper grade).
The 59 Cadillacs win the prize for going crazy with the fins,
because before that and after that they were never so big and
outstanding, nor pointed. I still think they look pretty cool.
Like Jerry said, it must have had something to do with the space
age thinking of the times and wanting to look ultra modern.
It‘s actually a little comical, but I recall someone being
quoted once, a GM engineer, that the Cadillac‘s tail fins added
stability to high speed travel. I bit far-fetched but not a bad
       try. ;)

My father found one of these in a barn, paid $500 for it, and
had his retired mechanic friend restore it. This was so long
ago the mechanic would not use Bondo on the dents, he used lead!

Dad sold it to pay for my sister's wedding :-(
