I looked up on Wikipedia after writing my post.
I find this article interesting:

Thanks Sofia, that helps. Britain has this to an extent in
London but France even more so -- it seems that if you dont live
in Paris you really are being left out in the cold.

I absolutely love Paris and the cultural life there. But
everyday life in Paris is hectic if one is not living in the
center of the town, people commute on the subway during hours.
Both parents have to work, small children are in daycare five
days a week, if there aren’t any grandparents available who can
help. So the quality of life in the countryside is probably
better if one is lucky enough to find a job nearby.

Jerry, I think it's the idea of someone having to pay them to
protest that people find laughable. It really doesn't take a lot
for people in France to protest. It would be like paying British
people to drink tea. The idea that someone might be feeding it
from the outside and encouraging them, on the other hand, isn't
impossible. Is it really relevant, though, if they would
probably do it anyway?

I agree Nikola.
I don‘t watch American news or TV and get everything off the
internet and my German Apps, so I follow the major European news
(it‘s virtually impossible unfortunately to live in the States
and ignore the US news- or let‘s say it takes an effort).
But, you are quite correct. The French don‘t need to be paid to
take to the streets to protest anything. They do it all the time
over almost anything. I recall a protest march in Paris where a
young protester was marching with a sign. When asked why she was
protesting she said, „Because I have a University degree in
philosophy and can‘t find a job.“
I amuse she meant she couldn‘t find a job using her philosophy
degree in some way. I always found that amusing.
