Why do people try to take illegal drugs?
By: Forest Date: May 1, 2019, 8:48 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
All around world there are people who take illegal drugs,
notwithstanding the deadly side effects and the full penalty of
law. Actually, in ancient era, there were hundreds of drug
stores on the streets in Rome and selling drugs wasn't illegal.
In Renaissance era, people commonly had used drugs for
painkiller or sex, and drugs were considered "gift of God". Just
in the medieval time, the Christian authority didn't permit
drugs, because religious leaders were afraid that diverse other
religions would spread into people through mysticism or
occultism and those mysticism were related to drugs. Today some
kind like hemp is allowed to smoke in some states in the US,
however most countries don't legalize most of drugs. Why do
people try to take drugs and to what extent do you think they
should be permitted? Let's share opinions about drugs!

Do you have any sources on drugs in Rome? I would be interested
in that. I am sure Morphine was known by then.

You may well be right, but that was not the official reason
given by the Catholic Church at the time, which was that you
were made to suffer by God. So, as a good Christian, you were
supposed to put up with it, not alleviate your pain by taking
powerful drugs. Co-incidentally, this was one of the reasons why
Jewish physicians were held in such high regard in medieval
times: they did give their patients opium, since they were not
bound by the teachings of the Catholic Church.
At least, this is what I've read.

One of the things that the Magi presented at the birth of Jesus
was opium. The 'myrrh' has many interpretations, but it is
likely to be opium. Drugs are so long history.Ancient mankind
regarded drugs as gods' gifts and as a means of reducing
suffering. In Roman times, there were 800 opium shops, not
morphines in the city, and about 15% of the total revenues in
Rome were from opium. According to historians, even Julius
       Caesar smoked marijuana after sex.

The perception of drugs began to change negatively after
Christianity was recognized as the national religion of Rome.
Drugs had been used openly in religious ceremonies, and vested
religious groups feared that if drugs went around the market,
new religions would arise. Christian groups have banned drugs,
claiming that suffering is a godly punishment and that they
should overcome with faith and repentance.Need always creates
       new value in human history.
Don't misunderstand me, please. I don't advocate drug taking at
all, just want to discuss the history of drugs and why they have
       been prohibitted in human society.

I think because a few people who control using and selling drugs
       can manipulate the world.

       Why can't myrrh be myrrh?
Except for ascetic sects and orders I don't see anything in the
       Bible or Christianity recommending pain.
Do you have any sources on this?

Yes, I do have a source. Unfortunately, it's in the German
version of wikipedia (the article on Papaver somniferum): "Das
       Satanswerk."
Approximate translation: Early Christianity, which saw illness
as God's judgement, forbade the use of opium as an analgesic in
the 4th century in some places. Charlemagne renewed this
prohibition in 810; the juice of the poppy plant was regarded as
the devil's work by some people.
Quoted from Matthias Seefelder: Opium. Eine Kulturgeschichte.

Ok. So this is the basis in the prohibition of drugs today? I
       dont think so.
Historically I thought it was the horrible example of what
happened in China in the 19th Century when Britain was trading
the Chinese opium for silk that served as a warning.
