       Richmond Heavies V Esher Expendables
“The Heavies back to earth with a bump!!”
       Pre-Game Comments
So it was back to earth with a bump for the Heavies this week,
an unexpected long journey down the A316 to Esher with traffic
disturbances thanks to a Traveler Show taking place in the
middle of the road leading to some of the Heavies needing to
take evasive action to avoid a collision with horses and riders.
This may have led to an lucky gypsy curse being put on us before
       the game!!!!
The weather conditions were once again foul and the wind would
no doubt play a key part in the game so winning the toss would
be essential. Now this is where the gypsy curse started and
after losing the toss and playing in to a force 8 gale we had
our work cut out. Esher deciding to play with the wind first
half to see how many points they could rack up, so it was
important the Heavies started well and ensure no early tries
       The Game
Every now and again the Heavies turn up late and start a little
slowly!! This was the case today, or it could have just taken a
long time to get 25 players out of the shoebox changing rooms.
Esher started strongly rushing into our half from the kick-off.
Within a few minutes they barreled their way over the line for
       their first score and a 7 – 0 lead.
The Heavies switched on but Esher took full advantage of the
wind and were able to keep us pinned down in our half. Managing
to break our defensive lines and giving away a penalty, Esher
came close to scoring their second try but decided to take the
penalty kick taking the score to 10 – 0.
The Heavies pack was dominant in the scrum winning a number of
penalties but were unable to clear their lines and kick for
touch due to the tornado gusts. We were reliant upon running
rugby to move the ball in to Esher territory, Wilson had a
number of great breaks and was unlucky not to have gone over a
couple of times in the first half which would have had a huge
positive mental impact on the game for the Heavies.
With pressure on Esher deep in their half the ball was kicked
back all the way to inside our 22 and Esher found themselves
with another penalty. Poor control and too much back-chat led to
a further 10 yards, allowing Esher to run the ball and score a
try giving them to another 7 points - Heavies go 17– 0 down.
With 10 minutes to go before half time skips made some changes
and Heavies ended the half strongly and were unlucky not to have
scored that elusive try - the half ended 17 – 0 to Esher.
With the wind behind us and more changes made, the Heavies
started strongly with another solid run from Wilson. After a few
plays Grant made a break bouncing his tackler, popping to Grundy
who showed the hands of an international fly-half as he flicked
the ball outside him to find Rogers who sprinted into the
corner. A hard kick to get was missed, 17 – 5.
Esher kicked off, the Heavies with the bit between their teeth
made strong runs with the forwards passing out to the backs,
Chocs darted through the midfield, the ball finding its way to
the wing for the only time in the half where Vyv sprinted into
the corner. Aware of the challenging conditions and aging kicker
he manoeuvered near the posts allowing Martin Fairn to score the
extra 2 points. With the score now 17 – 12 and the Heavies
clearly in control it looked like we would score 30 points in
       this half.
Heavies powered their way again into the Esher 22, strong
running from Chocs in mid field and powerful scrummaging from
the forwards ended up seeing Wilson barrage his way over the
line only for the ref to say “NO SCORE”. Once again the gypsy
curse coming in to play and as Wilson came up with the ball in
his hands you could see the frustration building.
A few moments later Heavies were given a penalty, Grant reacting
quickly takes the penalty in front of the ref who saw him
tackled from behind but still managing to score over the line.
The ref decided to award another penalty for the tackle from the
offside position “NO SCORE” There is never any silver and palms
to cross when you need it!!!
Esher managed to clear their lines then changed their game plan
and started to play tight controlled rugby. Both sides were
guilty of foul play on the floor and slowly the Heavies started
to lose control of the game and themselves.
A rare penalty saw Grant tap and go, bounce one tackle, to then
be flipped over a players head like being rescued by George
North, with no attempt of putting his arms around Grant, no
penalty or sending off for Esher, but we did get awarded a
       scrum.
The game was starting to heat up, leading to a little niggle,
Clem who clearly had not attended his anger management sessions
in the week fell victim to foul play, he was initially quite
restrained and pushed the player to the ground, the ref had
enough by this time and put both players in the bin for 10 mins
       to calm down.
Esher controlled the last 5 minutes well, keeping the Heavies
pressed in their own 22. With about 2 minutes left the battle of
Hollywood started with Vyv suffering a Shirley Temple moment on
the crown jewels leading to a red card for the Esher player and
Bish tried desperately to win his first Oscar following a kick
by an Esher player. Heavies punted down the pitch in a last gasp
to gain territorial advantage but Esher were able to run back
and hold out preventing a last Heavies attack and winning with a
       final score - 17 – 12 to Esher.
This was another game the Heavies should have won, but a lack of
the control on the pitch during the game led to a very
frustrating loss. There was a man of the match performance from
Wilson who ran hard andstraight all day long and was unlucky not
to score, he will be awarded THOR once he’s been recovered from
       captivity at Darkie’s house.
We can still win the league but must have huge wins in all games
left, so please make yourself available as much as possible.
       The Result
       Heavies Loss 12-17
       Scorers – Tries, Rogers 1, Vyv 1, – Conversions, M Fairn 1
Man of the Match – Wilson who ran hard all day, tackled
everything and was unlucky not to
       score.
