any of les habitants have a recommendation for a nice but casual
restaurant in St. Jean sur Richelieu or Montreal? I've been
advised to make reservations if I expect to eat on the first
weekend in June, so I can't do my normal walk around and pick.

Can't help you in St Jean, Icer, but can suggest a number of
places in Montreal proper (you're not going to spend too much
time down in St Jean). What turns your crank? There are a
bazillion places to choose from in the Plateau/Mile End/Main
area (the area I know best). Lots of good stuff in the Old Port
as well, but tends to be pricier for the level of food/service
you get.
And if you're looking for a sandwich, coffee and donut, I know a
guy...

Only one night in St. Jean, that's after a 75 mile ride, so
that's going to be more of a rest stop anyway. We'll have more
time in town on Saturday. I like to find local flavor when I
travel, things I can't get locally (though the Philly restaurant
scene covers most of it, especially Italian). So chain eateries
are out. Nothing stuffy, not that kind of trip. Not too loud,
and obviously I won't need a sports bar ( ^*&&%$!! ). I like
finding those unique unheralded jewels that you usually have to
be a local to know about. We'll be near the art museum, so
walking or biking distance (or stumbling, depending on their
beer & wine list) would be good.
Pretty psyched about the trip! Have to concentrate on this
weekend's trip to New Orleans first, though.

LOL This is Montreal, we're talking about. Gotta be half a
dozen of those. I'll guess you're talking about the Musée des
beaux arts on Sherbrooke (Check out the terra cotta army
exhibit, if it's still there. Went with my daughter last Feb
and was blown away.) That puts you near the very
restaurant-heavy Crescent Street (about two blocks East), which
is fun, if a little touristy. I haven't eaten in that area in
years, so really can't offer much. Trust me, though, you'll
have a thousand first-rate options on Crescent between
Sherbrooke and Ste Catherine. Look for the low-key places. The
tourist traps will be obvious enough.
If your talking about the Museum of Contemporary Art, that's
closer to The Main and St Denis Street, which are also heavy
with restaurants and night clubs. St Denis is more for the
clubbing set but the Main (St Laurent Street) has EVERYTHING.
Head North from Sherbrooke Street and there'll be a non-stop
parade of every imaginable type of eatery. Turn right at Prince
Arthur (about 500M) and you'll have the Greek eateries. Stay on
the main a bit and you'll hit Little Portugal and the dynamite
Portuguese Barbeque chicken joints (very casual). In between is
The Landmark Eatery in Montreal: Schartz's. You'll know it when
you see it by the line-up out the door (which moves very
quickly). It's basically a well-preserved but appropriately
dingy 1930's era diner that serves the definitive Montreal
Smoked Meat (basically beef brisket). Artery-clogging heaven.
Dirt cheap. History with a capital haich.
Keep going a few more miles to get to Little Italy. My
favourite joint there is called La Napolitana. You'll have to
wait (no reservations). Decent house red in tumblers (as God
intended). I've yet to discover a weak item on the menu.
Cheap. Noisy. Fast, but strangely relaxed.
