This one HAD to go seven games. There have been many chapters
in the Habs/Bruins rivalry, but after the season series they had
this year, this QF had to be special. The Habs won four out of
six, but that was overshadowed by the the Chara/MaxPac incident,
the 7-0 disaster and, perhaps most bizarre of all, a game in
which the two arguably best goaltenders in the game allowed a
combined 14 goals. What's been neat about this one is how both
teams have played in character, with the exception of the rough
stuff (which has been comparatively nonexistant). Thomas and
Price have been brilliant. The Bruins have been physically
dominant and have forechecked the Habs diminished D into
scrambly submission. The Habs, on the other hand, have used
their speed to make the huge Boston D look like oil tankers
competing in a sea flea derby, while sticking to their
short-pass/puck control system and 5-man D to muck up the Bruins
rhythm.
Pretty even match, really, and at the end of the day the
difference will probably be ascribable to coaching.

Good series, and thanks to the habs for wearing down the B's!
I never thought Price would get to this level, but I think
overall he outtplayed Thomas.

There will be changes next season and the first will be in the
coaching staff
HTML http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Gauthier+proud+Habs/4694339/story.html
Gauthier ducked a question about assistant coach Kirk Muller,
but he'll be moving to the Dallas Stars. His appointment as head
coach is on hold while the team awaits a new group of owners. The
general manager's priority on the ice will be to sort out the
defence. The Canadiens used 13 defencemen this season and 11 of
them, including long-term casualties Andrei Markov and Josh
Gorges, were on the payroll when the season ended.
"We're not going to pay 11 defenceman again," said Gauthier, who
has choices to make because Jaroslav Spacek and P.K. Subban are
the only defencemen under contract for next season.
"We have an opportunity to structure the defence the way we like
it. It's easier when you have many options."
Gauthier will make unrestricted free agent Markov and restricted
free agent Gorges his priority. And he said chemistry is
important, which means that UFA Hal Gill will return to play
alongside Subban.
Roman Hamrlik would like to come back, but he'd have to take a
huge cut from the $5.5 million he made this season.
The Canadiens have nine players under contract for a $34-million
commitment. If the salary cap stays at $59 million, they would
have $25 million to spend and Markov and Gorges would take a
chunk of that.
That means there probably be won't enough left to keep James
Wisniewski or Brent Sopel.

One more good defensive period against the Predators and this
series is in the bag.
