Were you in Cork? I lived there for 4 months in 1972. I was a
missionary for the Unification church; I converted a doctor's
daughter, and he sic'ed the IRA on me; I faced them down, and
was rewarded by the church by them sending me to the USA for my
next mission. I liked Cork, but I had to compete with many
beggars and drunks on the streets; (the provisional IRA were
generally drunk, as were the priests, but I did have some decent
discourse with members of the official IRA and proselytized some
sober priests; the priests were mostly reputed to keep their
housekeepers as concubines). What a life, eh!

Unification Church ideology, the Divine Principle, and that the
Rev Sun Myung Moon was the second coming.
After being in the USA for a year, my philosophical differences
with the church reached critical mass, particularly with their
support of Nixon, which was dumb because it alienated them from
most people. I was ripe for a change, and one of my potential
converts converted me to good sex, so I quit the church and
moved in with her. Interestingly enough, her ancestors hailed
from Cork, so perhaps a wee leprechaun guided my journey from
Cork to DC. ;)
