the space agency's shuttle fleet simply s into space in
workmanlike fashion than any other single aerospace endeavor
that's been attempted. In the end, the aging of the fleet, which
lost two vessels to tragic disaster, and the expense of running
it meant NASA had to bring its storied space shuttle program to
an end. That left a troubling, possibly decade-long gap between
the final flight of Atlantis last July and the emergence of
future-generation manned vehicles overseen by the space agency,
such as its deep-space Orion spacecraft and SLS launch system.
NASA has instead turned to promising partnerships with
commercial ventures like SpaceX, Boeing, Sierra Nevada, and the
United Launch Alliance.
In the meantime, NASA has been taking its decommissioned
shuttles on a last, grand tour of the United States, ferrying
them to new homes at several museums around the country and
thrilling folks on the ground with special fly-bys past some of
our most famous and beautiful landmarks and skylines. Atlantis,
the last shuttle to visit the International Space Station on the
fleet's final mission, will be displayed at the John F. Kennedy
Space Center in Florida. Enterprise has beenUSA Phone Number

display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
Challenger and Colombia, of course, were lost during missions
along with their crews. As the accompanying slideshow attests,
the tour of shuttles Discovery, Enterprise, and Endeavour atop
NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft has provided professional and
amateur photographers alike with the opportunity to snap some
truly epic shots of these aerial treasures during their final,

ceremonial flights. They swept by such iconic ground-based
landmarks as the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, the
Golden Gate Bridge, and the Hollywood sign. "This final shuttle
flight marks the end of an era, but today, we recommit ourselves
to continuing human space flight and taking the necessary—and
difficult—steps to ensure America's leadership in human
spaceflight for years to come," NASA administrator Charles
Bolden, a former astronaut, said after the final flight of
Atlantis on July 21, 2011. Looking ahead is of course the right
thing to do, but for now, it's worth it to look back on the
shuttle program one last time. ADVERTISEMENT 1. Liberty and
