       Our Life Now

Carol looked at her watch, noting that the time was already a
quarter past two. Normally she worked until five, except for
Friday, when her kids would come to the hospital once school let
out to meet her so that her oldest could receive her treatments
and, once a month, have some testing done. After that, her and
Shep would treat all of the kids to some junk food and fun, so
that Isabella wouldn’t have any of what happened that day,
       prior, on her mind.
Isabella. At thirteen, Isabella was more of an adult than a
teen, having to grow up fast because of her illness. Her
biological father, Doug, had left before Carol had even found
out she was pregnant, and with no way of contacting him, she had
to raise little Isabella almost by herself. If it weren’t for
Shep returning when Izzy was two, Carol didn’t know what she
       would’ve done.
In the beginning, the only one to cheer her up had been Izzy’s
mother, but once Shep came along, she stuck to him like glue,
needing and wanting that father figure in her life. By the time
she started getting sick at age four, Shep was there to calm her
when Carol couldn’t, and since she had Shep in her life, Izzy
never wondered about why she didn’t have a father, so up until
recently, she never had a problem. It was only when Izzy’s hair
grew out that she started asking questions.
Carol and Shep married when Izzy was three. By the time of her
illness starting, Carol had given birth to a second daughter
named Ayzliana Mae. Now, only five short years ago, Carol gave
birth to her youngest daughter, Zoiey Kathleen. Both Ayzli and
Zoiey’s hair was a dark blond, having taken after their father,
Shep, with a slight curl to it from Carol, yet Izzy, when her
hair grew out, had jet black, really curly hair, from both Carol
and Doug. That’s why she always questioned, and why Carol
always had to lie. Carol was sure that Doug would never come
back, so she never bothered with telling her the truth. Once
she was in remission and a little bit older, Carol would, but
for now, she would keep quiet.
When Carol walked into the room where Izzy was at, she had to
smile at the sight. Izzy was laying back, listening to music on
her phone through her earbuds, eyes closed, while receiving
blood and treatment, while Ayzli and Zoiey were curled together
on another bed, nine-year-old Ayzli reading to five-year-old
Zoiey. They still had their uniforms on, but Izzy had taken off
her wig, letting down her ear-length hair that was a mixture of
       purple and blue.
Carol had been criticized over letting her daughter dye it like
that, but it was something that Izzy wanted and needed, at the
time. Since they all went to a private, Catholic school, she
had to wear a wig on the premises, which seemed preposterous,
but if that meant that others would shut up about it, Carol was
prepared to do whatever. Did that mean that Ayzli and Zoiey got
to dye their hair this early? No. And it wasn’t favoritism or
anything. If Ayzli and Zoiey were in the same boat as Izzy, not
knowing if a treatment was going to make their hair fall out or
not, then by all means, Carol would give them the same freedom.
Since that wasn’t the case, they had to wait until they
graduated to do anything outrageous like that. Mainly, Carol
just wanted to keep her mother from having a hissy fit about it
all, since their school was connected to the church that she
       attended and worked at.
As Bella sat on the side of Izzy’s bed, her brown eyes shot
open, giving her mother a smile. Carol was surprised that Izzy
never complained much about having her treatments like this, but
she was also older than when it first started. Now, she just
       went with the flow.
Izzy took out her earbuds while letting the music still play, as
she turned to her mother. “What’s our plan for tonight?” she
asked, rubbing her hands together in a conspiratorial manner.
Another thing she got from her biological father was her ability
to prank whomever, whenever, and however, and normally Friday’s
was her time to shine in that department. Not that Carol let
her do whatever, but a little prank or two never harmed anybody.
But Carol had no ideas, yet, in that department, since she was
always the one to help out. “I’m still working on that,” she
said, winking at Izzy, who smirked and nodded. Carol leaned
over, picking one of the loose brown hairs from her wig off of
her actual hair before replying, “We were thinking about a pizza
and some movies. Your father got off of work earlier today and
got my list to go shopping with.”
After that was said, all three girls turned to her, their eyes
sparkling almost in a mischievous manner. “Which movies, mom?”
Ayzli asked, leaning in like it was a big secret or something.
But it was no big secret what kind of movies her daughter’s
liked. Unlike Helen, Carol was much more lienient with her
girls, allowing them to be who they were. In this day and age,
it wasn’t like you could hide everything from them, especially
with smart phones and the use of tablets in school, so Carol’s
only rule was “no extremes.” If it was suggestive, Carol could
live with it, which all movies were, nowadays, but as long as
there was no major cussing throughout the entire film or more
than suggestive sex scenes, Carol could live with letting her
       daughter’s see it.
And with Ayzli into dance and singing, Izzy’s obsession with
Twilight and Zoiey’s hang-up with horror films, a lot of what
they watched was suggestive in some form or another.
And even though Carol had made out the list for Pitch Perfect 2,
American Ultra and the remake of Poltergeist, she refused to let
them know what they were watching but she knew that they were
definitely in for a long night.
Carol just chuckled as she glanced at her phone, seeing a text
from Shep that he just arrived at the ER. Carol texted the room
number before looking back at the girls. “You’ll just have to
wait and see, but I don’t know if daddy will tell you or not, so
you might want to be good girls for him until he does.” Carol
inwardly smirked, because she knew Shep was just the opposite.
He always like to see the girls excited, and would usually get
them something extra on Friday’s just to make up for what he
didn’t get to buy them during the week. Yet all three girls sat
back, reading a book on their Kindle devices, as they quietly
       awaited their father’s arrival.

When Shep had tiime to stop and think about how much life had
changed for him, sometimes it didn't feel real. He fell in love
with Carol the first time he laid eyes on her and the rest, as
they say is history. He loved each day with his girls, they were
all his. It made no difference when he came in to Izzy's life.
He supported Carol no matter what but in the back of his mind he
dreaded the moment that the truth were revealed.
He stepped out his Jeep, reading the text from Carol about what
room to be in. Shep was such a softybto all of them,it didn't
take much for them to get their way. He was a sucker and he knew
       it.
Shep opened the door to the hospital room, "well, if it isn't
the most beautiful girls in the world" he greeted, beaming at
them all. Life wasnt always easy but he and Carol worked hard
every day to ensure that they made things as happy and normal
for the girls as they could.
