The Return

The scene: Carter left to do aid work on France, at the behest
of his cousin, Emilie. While there he broke up with Abby via
email, and she has refused to talk to him ever since. He's kept
in touch with everyone else at County. He has casually dated
since Abby but nothing serious, instead spent his time taking
his money and talents to do big things. He's been back in
Chicago for a few weeks unbeknownst to anyone to take over as
owner of the hospital and return to an active role as a doctor
there. It's his first day back.
Meanwhile, during this time period Abby finished med school, did
some traveling...with Luka. They've been seeing each other for
three years. Abby loves him but she finds that she can't just
commit and settle in, she's preferred to keep them as casual as
possible, her walls up. She and Luka seem to bring out in
eachother at times the worst. Luka loves her and wants to move
forward despite her withdrawal at times.

Abby slowly opened her eyes as the morning light began to peak
through the window of Lukas apartment. She yawned and stretched
her body, groaning as she did so. She usually didn't stay the
night, even after all this time. She knew it bothered him and it
wasn't like she didn't love him or want to stay...she just knew
she want ready to have her heartbroken again. Carter was the
only man she let in and he left. Abby turned and faced Luka,
studying his features. He was so handsome, dark like her. He had
his demons and she had hers. Perhaps they were merely each
others bandages in life. A way to surpass the hurt and time. If
she stared too long she knew she may never get out of that bed,
and a shift at county was on the agenda for the day.

Luka awoke to movement right next to him, opening his eyes. He
was surprised to see Abby still here, but even more surprised
that she stayed the entire night. The routine that they had
seemed to work for the two of them for so many years, and
normally she refused to deviate from what she didn't know. So
the fact that she was still here had him wondering if he was
a--still dreaming or b--going insane. The only other option
would be that she was ready to move forward, but since she gave
him no inclination of that, he refused to jump to conclusions.
He smiled at her while she studied him, lifting his arm to brush
some stray hairs away from her face. "Morning," he said, his
accent thick and heavy with leftover sleep. He could definitely
get used to waking up this way, but even after all these years,
he still refused to push her too far away, wanting her for
himself and all. He would just have to see.

"Morning" Abby replied, her voice raspy and soft, she propped up
on to her elbows, continuing to gaze at him. "I'm sorry for
staying, I must have fell asleep after the movie." she said
apologetically. She knew technically she had nothing to
apologize for, he wanted her to stay and had asked many times
before. He accepted the fact it wasn't in the cards, but she
knew he longed for it anyway. She felt that if she just let go
it would be so so easy to fall in love with him. He got her, he
understood her darkness and never pushed her to be anything she
did not want to be. There was comfort in him that she hadn't
felt in such a long time. It was a fact that both satiated and
scared her. Carter had left a hole in her the size of the grand
canyon when he left. She could never bring herself to read all
the emails he had sent over the years, they sat unread in an
inbox. Abby hadn't quite managed to let completely go of him
after three years. Luka was keenly aware of this and she was
sure it caused some friction but they never talked about it.
She hoped they could live in the bubble she had created for them
for as long as possible. Luke hadn't pressured her entirely for
more but she could tell that he would one day want that from her
and she just wasn't sure if she could ever be that for him.
