INTRODUCTION:The Tattaglia crime syndicate grew large and strong
by the 19th century. By then it had become a vast criminally
oriented society, they followed their own godfather, and his
rules and ignored any other form or orders will get fired.
Joining the mafia was like joining a religion, it was a
commitment of life, you couldn't retire from this "and this
still holds true today." This was a seruous religion, even fir
the vary young mafia members, they were taught basic uses of the
sword, knife, and rope, in order to be able to murder their
victims, it would be a very violent death to anyone who became
an informant.
Chapter one:
Eziozios joined the Sicilian mafia in 1983 after carrying out
his first murder on its behalf. Over the next 11 years he killed
a further 79 people before being arrested and informing on his
former associates in 1994.
ezizios decided to break the mafia's code of silence when his
former associates planned to kill him and he realised it was the
police that was keeping him alive. He is currently serving a
life sentence for 43 murders and 40 armed robberies in a special
prison for mafia informers in northern Italy—but will be freed
in five years because of the extent of his co-operation with the
authorities. His wife, son and daughter have been given new
identities and Ezizios hopes to join them to lead a life far
from his life of murder and robbery and far from his former
associates who would kill him and his family if they find them.
Eziozios lawyer, Orlando Ezio, says his clent's cooperation with
the police resulted in more than 100 convictions.
Chapter two:
In his first interview with international media, Ezizios, 54,
tells TIME via messages carried by his lawyer what drove him to
become a killer and to later inform on the mafia.
How did you get involved in the mafia?
At a young age, I was working at my father's restaurant in
Dante. I knew from the start that kind of work wasn't for me.
Every evening I'd think about money and power while polishing
glasses. I wanted to become someone but I couldn't be bothered
to study.
Chapter three:John Gotti was known as the "Teflon Don" for his
three separate trial acquittals in the late 80's. Finally, in
1991, the F.B.I. indicted Gotti, his underboss - Sammy "The
Bull" Gravano, and Frankie Locascio on racketeering and murder
conspiracy charges. Gravano shocked everyone when he broke the
omerta and testified against Gotti. Gravano was placed into
witness protection and served less than five years. John Gotti
is serving a life sentence in a federal prison in Illinois. His
son, John Gotti Jr., is currently acting as boss of the Gambino
crime family. However, a RICO case has been developed against
him.
So, there you have the true story of the mafia. Still a
little confused? Maybe this will clear things up: There are
currently five families in the New York City outfit of La Costra
Nostra (LCN). They are: Gambino, Genovese,Colombo, Bonanno,
and Luchese.
