The origin of clan Sand
By: Whirlwind[Sand] Date: May 28, 2013, 12:20 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hello, I'm Whirlwind[Sand], the founder of Clan Sand (July 04
2004). I have written another post on the sand site, but I was
sort of drunk when I wrote it so I'll try to make it concise and
simple. First of all. you can say I'm really proud of its
history and what it has achieved over the past decade. Those
sleepless nights weren't for nothing.
Why did you make clan Sand?
Clan Sand started as a desire for me to bring Snipers to Europe.
Why Europe?
Europe would give me the best ping, 300 ms. Also it was
untapped.
What did clan Sand play initially?
Snipers Remix.
Why Remix?
There was already a Sniper clan that just installed themselves
on Europe playing Elite Snipers. Unfortunately, it wasn't very
successful at making the game popular. I thought I'd try with
Remix. Second, I love Snipers Remix (it's kinda like my baby),
much more than Elite Snipers and right now, I won't debate with
you why I prefer it. It's my personal opinion.
Obviously, introducing a map the server has never played before
and making a clan based around it was hard. Real hard. I've
spent countless games teaching beginners how to a-walk, what
items to get etc. I think you US Easterners and Westerners had
it real easy with a community that was already familiar with the
game coming from Starcraft. Having to build the TFT community
from scratch was a daunting feat, and you know well that Snipers
isn't a noob friendly game, making it even harder to get people
interested in it.
How popular was it?
I think I succeeded in making the map semi popular on the
server. At one point, there wouldn't a game without remix being
hosted. Clan Sand has also spawned a few knock off clans that
pitted against us as rivals. One I remember the most was clan
PHAM from 2005, a French Snipers Remix clan which got made
following the map's popularity on Europe. It really took a whole
year to build that following.
The clan moved from Snipers Remix to Elimination Tournament in
2007, and 2008 onwards, the clan changed to Warlock. Now we're
back to the original Elite Snipers. But that's a topic for
another day.
Conclusion
To be fair, I don't know for how long I'll continue playing
Snipers. I sorta gave up following the clan's demise in 2011,
but Plague[Sand] rekindled my interest in it, and Death[Sand],
an old Remix Sand player which I played together with in 2005,
and of course, Tom who's keeping track of Sniper's history all
makes it worth the trouble. I'm trying to get a lot of old Sands
back, but most of them have moved to other games and have lives
on their own.

I will stay, but I don't know for how long I'll continue playing
Snipers. I will have to quit in a few months due to the
connection back home being pretty horrible. To be fair, I have
stopped playing competitively around 6 years ago and I'm well my
past my prime. Death[Sand] wasn't one of our prominent members
to be fair, but now seeing his contributions to Sand, I think
it's fair to say that he among others is fit to carry on the
Sand Legacy. As far as I'm aware of, pretty much everyone of the
1st Generation of Sand (2003-2007) has moved on from Warcraft 3.
I read your history of Snipers. So I guess that makes me a
second generation Sniper? I spent around a year on US East and
West before relocating to Europe for good in 2004.
[quote]I would describe the second generation of snipers as
legendary, arrogant, talented, and competitive.[/quote]
You summed it up. I don't know how bad the arrogance and map
hacking got in the third Generation but at that time I had
already moved on. I couldn't stand the community. I saw Europe
as an untouched land and made myself King of the Hill there. You
could say I started European sniping. :)
