       Notice to Mariners
       Erie Canal – Newark/Palmyra
       June 23, 2021
       Mariners are advised that the Erie Canal from Lock E-28B in
       Newark and Lock E-29 in Palmyra that was announced as closed in
       a previous Notice to Mariners due to a downed powerline in the
       Canal, has reopened to navigation.
       Adjustments to the height of the overhead powerline by the
       utility continue to be made during the day today and will have
       no effect on navigation.

       Notice to Mariners
       Erie Canal – Fairport
       July 3, 2021
       Mariners are advised that Main Street Lift Bridge (E-128) over
       the Erie Canal in the village of Fairport, is inoperable, in the
       down position. The New York State Department of Transportation
       has been notified.
       Updates will follow.

       Seems like the dilemma in Fairport was short lived... but must
       have been quite an embarrassment for the NYS Canal Corporation,
       who just a few hours before this happened was in Fairport
       celebrating the "reopening" of the Lift Bridge.

       But if you look at the June Notice to Mariners issued by the
       Canal Corporation you could see it was only a matter of time
       before "bridges" became the issue of the Month. It started
       moving from Lock-related issues to Bridges & Channel
       Obstructions.

       And now with July starting, the issues with Lift Bridges is
       becoming the biggest issues to using the NYS Canal System. Most
       folks should realize that the Lift Bridges are NOT owned bt the
       NYS Canal Corporation, those are all maintained by the NYS Dept.
       of Transportation.

       I guess with an "aging infrastructure" issue in this country,
       it's only "logical" that the Nation's First Superhighway, the
       Erie Canal, would be suffering the most.
       After all, it's probably the only highway in America that uses
       so many different structures to operate it; a man-made waterway,
       natural rivers, earthen embankments, concrete dams, reservoirs
       of Adirondack water, locks, bike/service trails, lift
       bridges...the list goes on.
       And any part of it is ready to fail after 100-200 years of
       operation, including having trees fall into it, lock doors
       failing to operate, and yes, even Lift Bridges that seem to be
       having issues these days.
       If you are keeping score... the NYS Canal Corporation boasts
       having 16 Lift Bridges in their Canal System. The math says that
       SO FAR IN 2021, about 25% of these old bridges have failed in
       some way. And we are just starting to use them again since the
       Canal has been re-watered for the Navigation Season.
