Notice to Mariners
Erie Canal – Middleport
May 20, 2021
Mariners are advised that the north span of the Middleport Guard
Gate in Orleans County will remain in the lowered position until
further notice. Traffic must proceed through the south span.
The operational status of all guard gates can be found at

Care to offer a guess as to why the EMBANKMENT side Guard Gate
was lowered?
One guard gate down doesn't stop canal traffic, nor does it
change the overall pressure in this Earthen Embankment section.
It won't change the Phreatic Line either.
But one thing will change...the possibility of internal slope
erosion caused by canal currents.
Water flow is affected by this change. Normal inboard slope wear
& tear, from moving water along the inside surface of the
rip-rap, would be reduced around that Coffer Gate, based on the
direction of the canal current.
Kind of like the affect cars have in wind tunnels, an Eddy area
will form.
Some would say doing this might be a protective measure for the
Earthen Embankment there. Maybe we will learn what the issue is
soon from the property owners...but it may be awhile as they
have their hands full.
Perhaps there may even be another "seepage" like the South side
Embankment in Brockport that has the canal closed there right
now. That's another area where Guard Gates have been lowered for
the public's protection.
Anyone saying there is nothing wrong with the NYS Canal System,
speaking about it's miles and miles of water impoundments,
obviously doesn't understand what all these Canal Alerts are
indicating.
The Erie Canal is broken folks, and people are still trying to
keep it from being properly repaired, even now with yet another
warning.
There have been over a dozen Canal Notifications in the past two
weeks, most for issues that will need repair in order to reopen
the canal fully, and without obstructions.

Brockport Canal Section Has Water, Erie Navigation May be
Restored

Just an FYI, repairs to the Erie Street Embankment Dam in
Brockport have been completed...Holley guard gates may be open.
We have WATER !!!!
The NYS Canal Corporation is most likely testing the EMERGENCY
REPAIR made to the leaking embankment in this section, which has
two different inboard slope materials. They placed a metal sheet
wall along the southside embankment in this section, which has
cement lining on one side, the North side is standard stone
rip-rap.
It's one of the MANY sections, along the western canal, that has
earthen dams on BOTH sides of the Canal, and the full height of
almost 20' with headspace.
Hopefully canal navigation & travel will be resuming by the
weekend... many boats are waiting patiently east of Little
Falls.

NOTICE TO MARINERS
UPDATE ERIE CANAL – SPENCERPORT TO HOLLEY
MAY 28, 2021
The New York State Canal Corporation today announced that the
Spencerport, Brockport, and Holley guard gates are in the raised
positions and all lift bridges will be operating starting on
Saturday, May 29th at 7:00 am.
Boaters should expect some delays in lift bridge operations as
lift bridge operators will be roving between lift bridge
locations to operate the lift bridges on Saturday, May 29th.

This is a good opportunity to highlight some new links in our
ECNA Forum Menu Bar.

These links were added to make it easier for Canal Neighbors to
find information on the ECNA, or the NYS Canal Corporation and
their work on Embankment Remediation & Repair, as well as the
NYS Canal webpage used for all Canal System Notifications.
We also have provided links to the Oxbow Park & Trail Blog, for
those living in and around Perinton & Fairport NY. There's also
a link to an online petition we started, to get the Oxbow
Earthen Embankment Dam repaired, it's one of the largest and
highest hazard water impoundment in the Perinton area
Finally, we have posted a link, to those who want to "dance with
the devil".. so to speak. Please use it wisely. We can only say
that anyone going there needs to use EXTREME CAUTION.
That link is labeled BEDLAM! for a reason, what you read there
just may drive some people insane
