Perinton Facebook Group says there are too many trees being
replanted on the Canal now.

Just when the NYS Canal Corporation was planning to pat
themselves on the back, for pleasing their NEIGHBORS along the
canal embankments west of Rochester, with their new Embankment
Restoration planting, along comes that Perinton-based opposition
group (called Stop the Clear Cut on Facebook) to "poo-poo" that
idea.
It appears now that one of the group's Leaders, Ms. Ginny Maier,
is complaining about too many trees, being planted with minimal
spacing, while other members in the group pretend to be
Professional Arborist, and make statements about the "certain
death" of all these newly planted shrubs. Most of these folks
apparently missed the memo that all of this work was done by
PROFESSIONAL landscape planners with actual experience as
arborist and learned in the field of Horticulture.
I guess the Facebook group & it's members went from being
"experts" in Earthen Dam Restoration" to now being "experts" on
Horticulture & Barrier Screen Planting.

You would think that sometime, one of the "REAL" neighbors along
the Erie Canal living west of Rochester, would tell this
Facebook group the truth... that they LIKE the NEW shrubs that
were planted, and they APPRECIATE that the Canal Corporation
kept their word on Embankment RESTORATION.
But that might ruffle some feathers in this Facebook group,
especially with "leadership". And that type of rebuke would get
those members tossed out for "insubordination" by the Group's
Founder, one Ms. Elizabeth Agte. It wouldn't be the first time
outspoken members would be silenced.
Funny that NO ONE in this Facebook group ever talks about the
simple fact that MORE trees/shrubs were planted as part of the
EERP work than were removed. Word from the NYS canal Corporation
is that they will have added 1700 "plants" along their CLEARED,
GRASS COVERED, embankments west of Rochester, when their EERP
restoration work is done in late May.
Because I happen to be an actual Erie Canal Neighbor and have
watched this embankment work unfold now for 3+ years. I can
share that there were 37 total dead or dying trees removed along
our 400' embankment, along with a few live trees. In it's place
the Canal Corporation planted 80 Restoration Shrubs of 5-6
different varieties. And some of those new plantings were over
8' tall, certainly the NYS Canal Corporation did not take the
path most thought here, they planted very large shrubs, not
seedlings.
The new shrubs have been watered and fertilized several times in
the past month, and all look to be just fine, planted to promote
& enhance the privacy of Canal Neighbors from the Erie Canal
Trail users. Some of those Trail Users who seem to think their
opinions matter more as canal property "guests", than the
issues faced by those people who are actual live next to the
Trail and are neighbors of the Canal. After all, we have to
tolerate rude and careless Trail Users on a daily basis, FULL
TIME, while these Facebook whiners just play the role of rude
trail user part time during their walkabout.
Empire Trail users like Ms. Agte, and Ms Maier, who think
because they happen to walk on the "top" of an Earthen Dam, they
know everything about that dam. These Facebook group leaders are
NOT neighbors along the Canal, they are only "part-time" guests
of the corporation that owns the Empire Trail. And now it seems
because they simply looked a few tree pictures on Facebook, they
have become "instant experts" in horticulture & landscaping an
embankment dam.
Sadly these Facebook opposition "leaders" can't even figure out
they are fighting on the wrong side, fighting to keep the Erie
Canal a DANGER in their own community.
What Danger you ask? Why the danger from falling trees on the
Trail and water, and danger from the roots of overgrown
vegetation compromising an earthen hill holding back millions of
gallons of water from flooding Fairport.
And what's maybe the hardest pill to swallow, for Erie Canal
Neighbors located in Perinton & Fairport, is that now, thanks
100% to that Facebook Group fighting canal maintenance, any
future embankments cleared as part of the new Embankment
Integrity Program (EEIP) will not be offered "automatic
restoration" similar to what neighbors west of Rochester
received.
Instead, Erie Canal Neighbors in the Perinton area, will need to
plead their case for "mitigation" of possible Empire Trail
privacy issues.
And they will have to support their request for a barrier
planting using the new EEIP Guidebook on Embankment Clearing
Procedures. And from what we have heard about the guidance, the
case for Restoration Planting will be an "uphill" battle, excuse
the pun.
Honestly, the whole idea of a group opposing canal safety
maintenance is a load of poop. Sadly it's been made worse by a
community with it's head in the sand it was built upon.
Wake up Fairport!
Wake up Perinton!

Doug! Talking of Poo Pooing Safety, and a load of Crap, just
take a look! !

Guess what is going on down the Oxbow.
It seems that some don't appreciate the work that has gone into
maintaining The Bow, and they are expressing their dislike by
leaving bags of dog shite in one place. They add to it every
day. I guess they think I am going to pick it up. Well, sorry
folks, not going to happen.
There are certainly one or two low life's living in Fairport by
the looks of how they treat our Park. And many who use the Oxbow
Trail actually are PART of that Facebook Opposition, so I'm sure
they have somehow justified that being a litterbug is somehow OK
but they support "trees & shade".
What a sad state our Community is in

Mike, I hear you loud and clear... low life people, those who
think they own the world. Somehow many of them believe others
exist merely to pickup after them and their pets. These types
seem to run amok in Perinton and Fairport, especially at the
Oxbow, now that it's been cleared out as part of NYS Adopt a
Trail.
We see the same thing here in Brockport, most of the time the
trail users, who drag their pets along for a walk, somehow can't
seem to figure out that the Empire Trail isn't a 335 mile long
"dog park" for their pet to meander about unleashed. Nor is is a
huge "linear toilet" for they pooch to poop where it pleases,
with owners who can't seem to muster enough strength to "bend
over and pick up after their pet".
But the solution is simple...
Report the Pet Owner Issues to NY State Parks & Trails or to the
new Empire Trail Group who put these rules into place.

And once the folks at Parks & Trails reply to you, maybe suggest
that they they start to implement better solutions for their
Canalside Trail property, like Pet Poop Perpetrator
identification through DNA analysis.

It's easy enough to identify the DOG BREED. And then you simply
find the dog & owner next time they hit the Oxbow to dump
another load of crap.

And that can be done quite easily, with a few well placed Trail
Observation cameras that are commonly used to snap photos of
game in the wild. You don't need to catch the pet owner in the
act of being low life scum, you only need the DNA analysis
combined with the owner and that dog breed.

I will be down to the Oxbow in a few days, I'll look at putting
a few Trail Cameras up and let's see if we can identify the
"poopertrator" and then we can send that info along to the NYS
Parks & Trails folks so that they can tell these rude pet owners
NOT to use their Trail unless they can abide by THEIR set rules
And perhaps it's time to get a set of those rules posted on some
new SIGNAGE down at the Oxbow Trail, that is also just a request
made to Parks & Trails. After all, they have listed the need for
pet owners to pickup their pet's droppings under the Empire
Trail Safety section for a reason:
Pet poop can be hazardous to HUMAN health, and the health of
other DOGS who happen along to take a sniff.
