For those who may wonder what type of information is shared at
these FEMA-led National Dam Safety Seminars, here's a list of
the topics from the last 27 seminars. This coming FEMA seminar
is #28, and will be virtual for the first time in 2021, due to
the pandemic.
Clearly the focus of these training events is on EARTHEN type
dams and the very specific issues these dams have. Any Breach
Analysis would be from studying earthen dam failures, as they
are most common. Levee's & Dams are primarily used when speaking
about earthen dams or berms used to control flooding.
Overtopping discussion would touch on the #1 cause of earthen
dam failures, which is water flowing out of the dam where is
wasn't designed to flow.
A clear 40% of FEMA Safety Seminars being taught to students,
who will become Dam Engineers or Inspectors one day, is centered
on earthen type embankment dams. This is the type of dams that
make up 125 miles of the NYS Canal System and exactly the same
type of earthen dam that the NY State Canal Corporation is
trying to repair in the Fairport & Perinton areas. But some
people still refuse to understand the safety issues at play
here.
The green arrows highlight seminar topics that pertain or are
exclusive to Earthen Embankment Dams

ASDSO Seminar on Improving Dam Safety & Emergency Response
DIR By: Doug K
Date: January 19, 2021, 10:26 am
---------------------------------------------------------
In line with the FEMA training already discussed in this
posting, here's another seminar sessions for those civilians who
want to see what Dam Engineers & Dam/Levee Emergency Response
folks do on a regular basis. You can follow the link below to
learn more or signup.

This is a THREE DAY EVENT, all virtual, look over the Course
Content here:

Here's the Day 1 Agenda
[attachimg=2]
This is a good chance for anyone in our area to learn &
understand about the dangers of unsafe, overgrown Earthen Dams &
Levees, and how these aging embankments along the Erie Canal are
placing the public in danger. It's also a good training course
for any Village & Town Leadership along the Erie Canal to
understand the danger the "impounded water" can have on their
communities and why it's necessary to have Erie Canal Flood
Emergency Action Plans (EAP) in place BEFORE something happens
in their communities.
It's also a chance for those special folks "Who don't know what
they don't know" to learn more about Dam Safety. In fact, the
entire course content seems to apply very well to anyone
fighting AGAINST the clearing of unsafe Erie Canal dams, to help
them understand that fighting dam safety is "not in the public's
best interest".
That statement also applies to any Facebook Groups who think
they know "everything" about Erie Canal and it's unsafe
condition, they too may benefit from a lesson in Dam Safety &
Emergency Preparedness given by one of the leading Dam Safety
advocates in this Country.
