Facebook Group Fighting Canal Maintenance Shares Responsibility
       for Colonial Belle's Issues
   DIR By: Doug K

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Whether anyone cares about this Facebook group or the
half-truths they live by anymore, I really had to bring this one
       up.
It's very interesting that the LEADERSHIP of this Facebook group
is now complaining about the need to close the NYS Canal System
early and it's affect on their "local" Fairport business, the
Colonial Belle Canal Tour Boat. We've seen the story on local
news; As a result of the NYS Canal Corporation closing the Canal
System to waterway traffic on October 14th this year, and also
telling the Colonial Belle Captain that winter accommodations
for dry dock have to change, the locals in Fairport are upset
they will lose ONE weekend of riding to watch Autumn leaves.
       [attachimg=1]
And of course the Founder of the Group, Ms E. Agte is insisting
that the issues is all because of the "new owners" of the NYS
Canal Corporation, New York Power Authority or NYPA. That same
change of ownership has caused Ms. Agte to take up arms against
the new NYPA Embankment Safety Programs slated to clear unsafe
embankments across 125 miles of the canal system. That program
is being run by the New York State Canal Corporation, who will
celebrate their 29th year as a NYS Government agency, insuring
the Erie Canal lives on. By the way, the Canal Corporation is
part of NYPA, who itself is a State Agency, will be starting
it's 90th year in 2021, it was founded in 1931.
Somehow Ms. Agte didn't get the memo that the Erie Canal already
is under conservation by a New York State Agency.
On the surface it may look like she understands the issues at
hand but what's most ironic about here statements is that her
group on Facebook has been one of the main reasons why badly
needed Canal Maintenance HAS NOT BEEN GETTING DONE! Their denial
of the truth about unsafe canal embankments, became a lie
believed by many folks in communities of Perinton, Fairport and
       Brockport.
There are still 100 miles of unsafe Earthen Embankments that
need to be cleared to make Erie Canal Neighbors, and their
       communities, safe.
There are 27 miles of cleared, safer embankments, that still
need to have a Restoration Barrier planted, work that is better
done with the canal & trail system closed.
There are many issues with Canal Locks needing repairs and
Spillway Cement dams along the trail embankment that are falling
       apart desperately needing rehabilitation work.
But Ms. Agte and her group don't seem to view themselves as part
of the "problem". After all, their desired solution is to do NO
MAINTENANCE to embankments and simply say that nothing is wrong
with the canal, it's not a danger, and there is no need for this
work or to close early. That line of thought only increases the
likelihood of an embankment failure, think of never changing
your oil in the car.. the engine eventually goes.
So that we are clear, the NYS Canal Corporation and it's Leaders
hves already tried to correct Ms. Agte and her Facebook group...
several times in fact. Here's the latest effort, using the
medium that Ms. Agte and her group love best...Facebook
       [attachimg=2]
With all the public has seen with Facebook these days, it's
desire to not standup to fake news and half-baked truth, it's no
wonder that these folks are allowed to fight against public
safety, putting your family and mine at risk. But to openly
complain about the NYS Canal Corporation's need to do
Maintenance that was stopped by a group you created to subvert
the repair efforts, well it's amazing that ANYONE would still
follow this group or it's fractured founder.
When will Fairport residents & community members police one of
their biggest problems in their town?
That would be the misinformation campaign of a Facebook group
that wants to keep their community in danger, by their own lack
to fully comprehend, what the REAL issues are along an unsafe
Erie Canal System right in their own backyard.
It is not about shade, as some on Facebook would tell you, it's
always been about safety, embankment dam safety... 125 miles of
       them.

Re: Facebook Group Fighting Canal Maintenance Shares
       Responsibility for Colonial Belle's Issues

And before everyone says that this may be a reach to blame the
Facebook Stop the Canal Clear-cut group for the fate of the
Colonial Belle let's remember there is a big "WHAT IF" that is
       in play here...
Just think for a moment about this...
What if Perinton & Fairport had heeded the message about
Embankment Maintenance and Management they were given on
       December 9, 2018?
The New York Canal Corporation came to this community and showed
them the information and also talked about safety of the
community, the timeline for work, and the reasons behind this
embankment maintenance work. They also told them they wanted to
PREVENT the issue of embankment related closures.. like this.
       [attachimg=1]
It was directed right at Fairport & Perinton, one of the areas
that was a High Hazard Embankment Dam looming over several
       neighborhoods and an elementary school.
       [attachimg=2]
And it was all about safety then, just like it still is today...
and still Perinton/Fairport residents support a Facebook group
that is fighting against fixing canal issues and getting proper
       embankment maintenance done.
       [attachimg=3]
And now this same Facebook group wants to point their fingers at
others when the BLAME for EARLY MAINTENANCE rests squarely on
       their shoulders?
If Fairport embankments were cleared when they should have been
just MAYBE none of what's happening today would be so... and
just maybe the Colonial Belle could get that extra weekend
       peeping leaves.
       Have to wonder...
