NY State DEC map shows MANY high hazard dams along the Erie
Canal

It's not the most popular position to take or defend, but the
Erie Canal DOES have some serious public safety issues that it's
new owners, New York Power Auth., has been trying to solve since
taking control of the Erie canal system in 2017. It's not just
about unsafe earthen dams folks, it's about all of the 100 year
old structures that have seldom been inspected and rarely
maintained properly.
The NY State Dept of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has a
great website, that has many interesting maps and resources. The
one we use at the ECNA is the NYS Dam Inventory Map, which runs
on Google Earth. It shows up under the Misc Environmental Maps

You can go to the website and check this tool out, it's a quick
download and then open up to see our area. Red squares ahow the
Class C - HIGH HAZARD dams in our State. You can zoom to the
levels I will show here.
First, there are UNSAFE ERIE CANAL DAMS in the Holley &
BROCKPORT areas. I have shown Brockport's Class C Dam

And if this dam broke it would flood all of this, including the
U of R Hospital and many nice neighborhoods. This is the
Brockport Smith Street Dam FPZ or Flood Plain Zone and would
spill over Ridge Rd, as it's al; downhill from the Canal here.

It's all part of a dam safety issue known as Hazard Creep,
explained in the video here. Next time you go for a walk on the
canal take note if you walk uphill to it. if you do, you are
probably in a Hazard Creep Zone.

And there is also an UNSAFE ERIE CANAL DAM in SPENCERPORT

And for those on the east-side of Rochester, who still believe
there isn't any safety issues along the Erie Canal, here's your
map of UNSAFE ERIE CANAL DAMS in PITTSFORD, PERINTON, &
FAIRPORT. There are 3 there, and that's not including about 12
miles of unsafe, tree-covered earthen embankments that keep the
water from spilling out along the west side of Perinton

So the lesson here is simple...Before you believe someone else's
word about public safety in and around the Erie Canal Corridor,
you may want to check the facts out yourself. There are those on
Facebook these days saying there is NO safety issue on the Erie
Canal...and they are all wrong. Don't be fooled by someone who
might be a fool themselves.
There are STILL major issues with safety, and many places that
need to be repaired along the Erie canal, and it's embankments,
the data speaks for itself, all we have to do is find it, and
learn.

NYS Canal Corporation Redefines FEMA Flood Maps along the Erie

The message has ALWAYS been about SAFETY when it comes to the
NYS Canal Corporation and their work on the raised earthen
embankments they own. That message is now amplified by new
Owners, the New York Power Authority, who has the task to clean
up the canal mess and make NY State SAFE again.
The ECNA has been following this work since it started and have
tried to direct people to the information that was needed to
help Erie Canal Neighbors. And we have seen a HUGE change with
the Erie Canal, it's Unsafe Dams and those who would try to stop
the ongoing work to repair a public safety nightmare for NYPA.
It doesn't get any plainer than this... if you want trees on
Earthen Embankment Dams then you also have to be OK with paying
for FLOOD INSURANCE that was never required before!!! It's up to
each of you as neighbors, and community members to decide if
fighting safety is worth the cost to your pocketbook.
Is this easy enough for all of the NEIGHBORS along the Erie
Canal to understand?

Corporation has created for their Earthen Embankment Integrity
Program (EEIP) in 2018

Perinton & Fairport on the Eastside, where the fight against
Canal Safety is raging still.
