Pittsford Mayor pipes in!
DIR By: Michael Caswell
Date: August 13, 2020, 5:18 am
---------------------------------------------------------
That Facebook group is complaining - again - on their Stop the
Canal Clear-Cut page! This time it's the dry grass on the
embankment slopes.
HTML https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/s1080x2048/117863254_10218938319388665_5274904944278984183_o.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_sid=825194&_nc_ohc=G_OBUAxik0gAX8dcfb_&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-1.xx&_nc_tp=7&oh=d5afacdcd7c5763ddb0093a88f9d0fd3&oe=5F59B165
But Mayor Corby pipes in - see the comments section - "That
dead grass will definitely stabilize the bank!"
If the village of Pittsford was so concerned, surely Mayor Corby
could get the fire brigade to pump a little water out of the
canal and onto the embankment?
It's August, grass dies back this time of year. It will grow
back soon enough.
Stop whining - please.

A Letter to the Pittsford Mayor about Embankment Dams
DIR By: Doug K
Date: August 27, 2020, 11:32 am
---------------------------------------------------------
You know, after reading Mike's post I thought perhaps this Mayor
was uninformed. So I decided to send Mr. Corby an email. and let
him know he was complaining about embankment maintenance work
that was done to REPAIR unsafe embankment dam conditions along
the Canal he claims to love. I was going to give him a couple
posts to read that explain about earthen dam safety, and how HIS
public would be in danger if his words of a washout came true
Then I took the time to read a little more about his position on
the Erie Canal Embankment Integrity, and decided to write this
letter instead...
Mr. Corby,
Mr. Mayor, just so you are aware, you are fighting AGAINST
public safety by your continual rant that trees need to be
spared along Erie Canal Earthen Dams. Your position that trees
along the canal are good in some way, is slowly falling apart,
just like the dozens of trees falling into and around the canal
& trail these days. Go look at the posts on Facebook of the
Group you are supporting under Ms. Agte. They are all seeing
trees falling and showing them along the trail.
HTML https://ecna.createaforum.com/general-discussion/yet-another-tree-down-into-the-navigation-channel/msg1257/?topicseen#msg1257<br
/>
Hard to believe that someone in your position would take such a
definitive stand against public safety based on the "opinions"
of a Facebook group who's been proven wrong time & time again.
Here's another ECNA post that shows that your idea of grass
somehow "destabilizing" embankments is all "wet" as well.
HTML https://ecna.createaforum.com/the-stop-the-clearcut-argument/an-easy-solution-to-the-stop-the-canal-clear-cut-problems/msg1254/?topicseen#msg1254<br
/>
You have the right to believe what you want sir, but when your
BELIEFS put the general public in DANGER, the line has to be
drawn. You are treading on ground as unstable as embankments
covered with trees, with your claims that "nothing is wrong"
with the canal. The property owners have been crystal clear on
their message of safety, and you sir, have helped to minimize
that message.
Mayor, just be aware that much of what the Stop the Canal
Clear-Cut group has been saying for the past 3 years borders on
nonsense, and lies. And you are in support of this ignorance of
public safety repairs along the canal, which is evident by your
own statements.
HTML https://ecna.createaforum.com/perinton-canal-embankment-discussion/pittsford-mayor-supervisor-still-don't-get-it/msg946/#msg946<br
/>
Will it take someone dying from a falling tree in Pittsford
before you wake up and see the danger you are placing the public
in with your short-sighted views?
Because when that happens the ECNA will be the FIRST in line to
tell the public that YOU ignored all the signs and warnings.
--
Take Care,
Douglas Kucmerowski
Mayor Corby is maybe the only Mayor I have heard of in the area,
that has decided to fight against the public's safety and the
work that's ongoing along these raised earthen dams that make up
our section of the canal. It's quite a bold move, play to the
environmental vote. But if a flood does happen, because the
trees are not removed from embankments, or someone DIES because
a tree fell on them during their walk along the Erie Trail in
Pittsford, I am sure the Mayor might regret that decision
afterwards.
But what MANY people would like to know is what these TWO
leaders in the community are going to do when the New York State
Canal Corporation restarts their Earthen Embankment Integrity
Program work in Perinton & Fairport early in 2021.
[attachimg=1]
The final touches are being put on the Environmental plans and
the Canal Corporation is preparing the Embankment Clearing
Handbook and Guide. It's only a matter of time before they get
to the most unsafe embankments they have east of Rochester. The
Oxbow Lake dam is perhaps one of the worst, and has already had
to have EMERGENCY REPAIRS done once to keep it from breaching.
Will the Fairport Mayor decide to fight against the safety of
the public and stand in the way of canal embankment repairs and
tree clearing to make the Empire Trail safer?
What will the Town Supervisor in Perinton do, will he fight
against a safety program? His Town has a bit more than 11 miles
of canal running through it, much of it deemed unsafe & unable
to be inspected properly. The Oxbow Dam alone is more than 3/4
of a mile and has heights that are close to 50 feet from top to
toe.
What will residents say if UNSAFE Erie Canal Embankments remain,
forcing many to buy Flood Insurance to protect themselves and
their property from local leaders who failed to properly protect
them ?
I guess we will all have to wait and see...

Pittsford & Fairport have bigger issues to solve than unsafe
Erie Canal Embankments
DIR By: Doug K

---------------------------------------------------------
With all that has been seen on our local news lately, regarding
the BLM movement, it would appear that the Mayors of Pittsford &
Fairport have much BIGGER issues to solve in their respective
Villages besides tree-covered Canal Embankments.
Trying to stop a safety program aimed to help residents,
shouldn't be something considered as "a good use of their time".
They can chose to continue a fight AGAINST the safety of their
residents and try to stop this needed Erie Canal Embankment
repair & maintenance work. Or they could fight the huge
DIVERSITY ISSUES in their own neighborhoods and work to change
what looks to be a very "white-washed" community.
Once again it's the numbers that don't lie, and the facts thet
tell the REAL story... just like data that supports Erie Canal
repairs.

To be clear, this appears to be following a pattern in the both
towns & villages, but Perinton / Fairport are by far the least
diverse.
No wonder a few Black Lives Matter signs were torn down in the
past months by a few locals in Fairport, it appears they just
don't fit there...

And just so you understand how dilapidated this canal system is,
here is a major repair carried out a couple of years ago. If
this hadn't been done, many people living around Jefferson
Avenue could have perished in an Erie Canal embankment breach.

Mike, I'm pretty sure that the consensus about Erie Canal
Safety in Fairport & Pittsford has come down to this sad
statement:
If people don't believe Canal Embankments are unsafe, they
simply won't be hurt or killed or have property & lives swept
away in a Flood, because there is NOTHING wrong with the Canal,
so nothing is going to happen to them.
Much easier for Town & Village official to take the "ostrich
approach" and simply stick their heads in the sand when it comes
to Erie Canal Embankment Dam safety.
Someone who DIDN'T stick their head in the sand, when it comes
to BLM & Diversity issues in Fairport, is the Deputy Mayor
there. Here's his statement from June 2020, when the Black Lives
Matter movement was hitting it's stride, turning protests into
policy. We posted this earlier, and it still rings true today.
Sadly it won't change anything in a Town or Village that doesn't
think a 'whitewashed community' is any worse for them than
unsafe earthen canal dams.
