       Some Neighbor eh!
   DIR By: Michael Caswell
       Date: May 27, 2020, 7:05 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
One evening, a car pulled up outside my house, and the driver
was looking over the property next door, which had just been put
       on the market.
I asked him if he was interested in the property, and he was.
The owner wasn’t in, so I invited him to look around from my
back yard. We live on the canal and the view is pretty pleasant.
A few days later, I heard the property had sold, and we looked
forward to a new family moving in. All was well, what could be
nicer, a couple with two small boys who I imagined would enjoy
the fishing and boating canal life.
After about a couple of months, out of the blue I received an
email from the neighbor. He sent me a long list of complaints,
things he could see in my yard. I had a pile of planks for my
dock. They were about a foot tall, laid along the shoreline. A
rock under a tree, a steel spike left by previous owner for boat
mooring. My shed door was open, he could see inside, a drum I
was using for composting was ‘unsightly’. etc. etc.
I obliged him and moved all this ‘stuff’. But he then complained
about my dog wandering over his lot. The dog was used to
wandering over there, as the previous owner wasn’t bothered by
it. My neighbor had three dogs of his own, and they wandered
over my yard too, so much so that one fell into my swimming pool
(they were terriers), and got through the fence. We heard this
ruckus one evening, and he’d jumped over the fence and into my
       pool to rescue the dog.
So, I had a new fence put up along the property line, actually
4-6” inside my line. I had it surveyed and pegged, just to make
sure. He started complaining about the fence, how could he get a
backhoe through, it was installed on his land, (of course it
       wasn’t). It spoiled his view.
I told him his view ended at the fence. What was on my side was
no longer any of his business. If he didn’t like what he saw,
       then don’t look.
It was obvious then, the man was a problem, so I wanted our
privacy from him, and I planted 30 Arbor Vitae trees along the
fence between us. It matched the other side of my property too,
where they screened off my pool.
I put a black plastic trim edging along the bottom of the fence
to protect it from weed whackers. He complained about that being
       unsightly.
I had a contractor mow my grass, and one day I saw him talking
to them. I asked them what was going on. He’d told them to move
their truck and trailer from outside his house. They were parked
in the street, public space. Again, another problem he had with
knowing where his boundary was. He had also asked them to come
around his side of my new fence and trim all along the edge. I
told him, (he was still hovering around), that if he wanted to
use my contractor to weed whack his border, then he should pay
       them.
I put up a wire mesh tube around several of my Arbor Vitae as
       the deer were eating them.
I saw him out there with his wife and he was actually shaking my
trees and wire mesh. I asked him if he had a problem, and he
said, “This looks like Shite!’ My reply was, “Don’t look then!”
Then he started moaning about a larger pine tree. It had
suddenly started to shed needles and I was thinking about
lopping it, but there was new growth, so I wasn’t quite ready to
do that. He got all stroppy about it, so, it’s still there,
       totally dead now.
A few weeks ago, he was in the bed of the canal opposite us,
cutting up a fallen tree. He threw all the branches into the
canal, a complete hazard to shipping when the canal was full.
Someone must have reported him, because he was out there picking
them all up and depositing them on the island a week or two
       later.
Then there was the incident regarding a Jon boat I had. I’d put
it on my front lawn by the house. It had been there a few days
as I was waiting for someone to take it (sold). Apparently, the
code enforcement officer came around and mentioned this to my
wife. I had just disposed of the boat, so the three day rule (I
       wasn’t aware of) was mentioned.
Later, on talking to the official on another problem, I
discovered it was my neighbor who put in the complaint; we
seemed to be in accord on the reason for the complaint.
There’s more, but I’m sure you get the idea that things are not
       well here.
So now you have more of an idea as to why this Nextdoor
complaint has been filed, and why I am banned again for 30 days.
My "neighbor" has no concern about Erie Canal embankment safety
problems, and says he worried about what I am posting.
The real truth, he just doesn't like me, or my replies to his
complaints about my property. He whines about any and all posts
I put on Nextdoor, just to get back at me.
It’s really quite pitiful, and yet Nextdoor says "I'm the one
who's wrong" and not being neighborly...all a lie.

What is needed is the backstory... to Mike's new Nextdoor
       Fairport banishment.
Mike originally posted a link to a new post on this ECNA Forum
to Nextdoor Fairport, it was about the Midland Michigan Dam
       collapse...
  HTML https://ecna.createaforum.com/general-discussion/midland-dam-collapses-actual-video-of-the-dam-wall-slump/
And he received this reply telling him that the topic of dam
safety was too controversial for ND.
       [attachimg=1]
And I put this up into our two ECNA Nextdoor groups so that
people would know not to expect any posts for awhile... that
garnered the comment shown from one of our ECNA family.
       [attachimg=2]
       [attachimg=3]
All this prompted Mike to give me a call and discuss it... he's
baffled as to how he could have been controversial in that
Nextdoor post. I was equally amazed as Mike has just become a
Nextdoor Lead in his Fairport Village neighborhood on Nextdoor.
He surmised it had to be this "new" neighbor who now seems to
have a vendetta against anything Mike posts.
So, there's the whole story...once again it seems we may have
made a mistake getting the ECNA involved on Nextdoor, right now
it's more headaches than any value we get trying to link canal
neighbors together there. That was our original intent, and
maybe soon we will have to reconsider if Nextdoor really
represents "actual" neighborhoods... ones that care more about
real neighborhood issues, not just lost cats, dog poop and good
       plumbers.

Aha! The Man himself! Making comment on my Facebook page. Now
       why would he do that?
This photo of the boy with his fish is on my Oxbow Blog page

What is this? Sucking up? Still being a prick?
Or, as usual, just trying to irritate me?
Or just doesn't know when to quit?
       Good grief!

       So, let me understand this...
You just received a positive comment, on a 7 month old post, on
an entirely different topic than Embankment Dam Safety, and it
happened a couple days after someone commented on Nextdoor to
have you & your "controversial" post removed?
Comment on a post... SEVEN MONTHS LATER?
Seems like someone is feeling bad about what happened to you,
maybe even a bit guilty, and is making up for what they have
       caused?
Or maybe it's statement that talking about Fishing in the Oxbow
is OK, but Public Safety & Embankment Dams are taboo topics?
It's just too "coincidental", especially in light of the
Nextdoor "controversy" that got you booted.
Sorry that your Perinton & Fairport neighbors chose to be so
"willfully ignorant" about the danger around them.
But no worry Michael, UNSAFE embankment dams WILL be cleared of
what's causing the safety PROBLEMS eventually, because the New
York State Canal Corporation does NOT want the Erie Canal to be
the next flood disaster that the country is talking about.
