Dog Food

You've probably been told that feeding your dog chicken bones is
a bad idea, because they splinter and can choke your pal. Yet
when you roast a chicken, a large amount of the carcass is bones
and skin. Similarly, just look at the waste from a dozen wings.
So here's what to do.
I save all those bits, and stick them in a ziplock bag and
freeze them until I have a pot full. If you have a pressure
cooker, place the parts into the pot, and fill until about 1/3
full of water. Then cook them for about an hour on a slow
simmer. You could also do this in a bigger pot, as long as it
has a lid to keep the steam in, although not being under
pressure, it will take a bit longer. Drain off the liquid and
refrigerate for use as chicken stock.
To check they are cooked through, just try breaking a bone. If
it is hard to do, its not done. If it crushes in your fingers,
that's good.
I usually run all this through a meat grinder. There is a
tremendous amount of goodness in this mix, bone marrow, calcium
etc. My dogs love it mixed in with their dry food.
