       Canal History shows decline

       I cam across this article recently, as I was doing some Family
       History research in Wiltshire UK. The account of the canals
       there is, to me, very interesting.  The system between Bath and
       London was built to move the better quality stone from the mines
       at Corsham to London. This competed against the Portland (South
       Coast) company, who used ships to sail the stone around to
       London. Until this canal was built the Corsham (Bath) stone was
       hauled by horse and cart over treacherous roads, and was too
       expensive.
       Eventually the two companies merged into The Bath & Portland
       Stone company. And this is where the name Portland Cement comes
       from.
