Erie Canal Embankment Before & After Photos

Here's a nice set of comparison pictures showing the
transformation of the Canal Embankment
Approximately 200' away from the house, which was almost
completely hidden from view along the Empire Trail

For those in the Rochester area saying the Erie Canal
Embankments in the western section are a 'dustbowl' and weed
covered... you are wrong once again.
These photos were taken today... while they mowed a 1.5 mile
long earthen dam.

Erie Canal Embankment Remediation - The Finished Product

An early April Update for the Earthen Embankment Restoration
Project (EERP) as the Phase 3 work is starting to take shape
just east of Brockport Village. Here's what the final product
should look like for those neighbors most affected by the
Embankment Dam maintenance & repair that took place. And of
course, it's always nice to start with a BEFORE picture...
because some people still can't seem to understand what has
taken place here along the Erie Canal.

It's amazing isn't it?
The tree you see on the right side of the lower picture was left
for reference, because of it's unique dual tree trunk. As you
can see the earthen dam now has the proper covering of grass,
and a noce privacy barrier to mitigate the affect of the Empire
Trail traffic on neighboring properties. Most neighbors along
this stretch of Canal, have lost all privacy over the past 3
years, due to this EERP dam maintenance work, this privacy
screening is a welcome relief.
Of course there are always those "critics" in our community, who
will NOT accept or understand that this is what a properly
repaired earthen dam looks like. To them, it's still about the
"trees", and in many cases those critics are the folks who walk
along the TOP of the Embankment Dam, not the Canal Neighbors
living below.

What you see in that COMPARISON image at the bottom, is a safer,
more sustainable, and NYS Safety Compliant Earthen Erie Canal
Dam, with it's INTEGRITY restored, and it's neighbors are safer.
It is also an Embankment Dam that was outfitted with a few new
bushes & trees, to mitigate privacy issues, something promised
to the Erie Canal Neighbors living along it, and delivered by
the NYS Canal Corporation.
Promises Made... Promises Kept...

Today, April 21, 2021, marks the completion of the Earthen
Embankment RESTORATION Project for Zone 37 in Brockport.
The PROJECT has had it's delays, for many different reasons,
including from a Facebook group who fought against Embankment
Repairs as well as from a Global pandemic called Covid 19, that
all but stopped work for a year. But once the obstacles were
addressed sufficiently, the work carried on.
The EERP Project has also been a very trying time for many of
the Erie Canal neighbors who live along these Earthen Embankment
Dams.
From a loss of privacy & security, to having to contend with the
New York Canal Corporation, who hasn't been the best neighbor
though all of this change. They have not communicated as well as
they could have, they have not listened well to the concerns of
their neighbors throughout the dam remediation process. It has
been a learning process for both, hopefully lesson have been
learned, and the best parts of this "project" will be carried
forward as NYPA and the New York Canal Corporation work to
complete the next 100 miles of Embankment
But no one can say that the Canal Corporation hasn't delivered
on what they promised...
A new, clean, safe embankment covered with grass, and a planting
of barrier screening along sections of their property that pose
a privacy concern for their neighbors.
Here's a few BEFORE & AFTER photos, because you cannot full
appreciate what has been done until you see the unsafe dam in
comparison to the clear, grass covered safer version.

as you walk along the Empire Trail and the new Barrier
Screening.

Now, as you look at these images ask yourself a few simple
questions...
Can you see the difference in how the Erie Canal Trail looks
today, including the EARTHEN EMBANKMENT holding back the Erie
Canal water that was repaired?
Can you see the difference between an unsafe, nearly invisible
earthen embankment dam, and an earthen embankment that has been
made safer as well as aesthetically pleasing for it's
neighboring homeowners ?
Now as you look at these comparison pictures ALSO ask yourself
these questions:
Why would any person, or any group on Facebook, or for that
matter, ANY canal neighbor, be against having safer Erie Canal
embankments, with a reduced chance of breaching & flooding?
What would be the reason to oppose something that the owners of
this canal property say is safer, and needed for the safety of
the public living near the Erie Canal?
Some things just don't make sense, like fighting against a
safety program like this public works effort by the Canal
Corporation, an Embankment Integrity Program that makes EVERYONE
safer, including people that can't understand the difference
between an unsafe dam and one that has been repaired.
You decide which is better for the general safety of the
public...
