For those of you who want to understand specifics on the Erie
Canal Vegetation/Remediation Project, here's an overview of what
is trying to be accomplished by the removal of large woody
vegetation.
The NY Canal Corporation has guidelines already set regarding
exactly what has to be accomplished to make an Embankment Dam
safe. It's not up for debate, it's just one of the many rules
they need to follow, very much like driving a car and having to
stop for Red Lights & Stop Signs. The main goal, if you will, is
to enable a Vegetation-Free Zone around all critical areas of a
Dam. The reasons are varied and well described in three main
Guidelines being used.

In essence they are following the guidelines spelled out that
clear all areas for proper Inspection, Maintenance, and even
allowing helicopter access overhead if needed for emergencies.
Please review the pictures for more detail and a simple
overview.

These SAME principles are followed by NY Dept of Environmental
Conservation as well.

It is simply a matter of making the Erie Canal LOOK like these
pictures, which is fundamental to insure the Embankment Dams
remain safe.

Also included is a 5 Year Remediation Plan, note how it looks
similar to what has been proposed by the NYCC, it's not a
question decisions by anyone or any group, the RULES already are
available, it's simply a matter of implementation. Anyone
proposing a different strategy is failing to understand or
accept WELL ESTABLISHED METHODS for performing this type of
work.
