Just found this great publication to share on Canal Embankments
from the US Dept of Interior... for those who understand there
is a science to safety.
First a question.. Could this be the Erie Canal soon?

Some say no, some are being more cautious and making SURE it
doesn't happen... that would be the NY Canal Corporation through
their new Earthen Embankment Integrity Program or EEIP.
This is a great manual to read, it's from the Western
Reclamation Bureau but could fit any Canal Operation, even one
like the Erie.

Here's the Table of Contents for this manual:

It has some great illustrations of why Canal Embankments need to
be maintained properly to prevent slope failures.

And there is plenty of information on how Embankment Remediation
is done, and what equipment is used. Seems to support everything
the NY Canal Corporation has been doing along our own Erie
Canal.

The ECNA would suggest everyone take a good look at this one,
it's tailor made to help understand what has to be done to
protect the Erie Canal
